Somerville College announced that the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development (OICSD) has been recognised in the UK Government’s official communication on the UK-India trade agreement—a milestone that underscores the growing role of academic institutions in strengthening bilateral ties.
The UK government’s release highlighted how Indian business investments are not only fuelling economic growth but also deepening intellectual and academic collaboration. The OICSD, housed at the University of Oxford, stands as a prime example of this synergy, acting as a bridge between the two nations.
A Decade of Impact and Leadership
Established in 2013 at Somerville College, the OICSD has emerged as a hub for interdisciplinary research, policy dialogue, and the nurturing of leadership on sustainable development issues—particularly with an India focus.
Over the past 12 years, the centre has supported more than 70 exceptional Indian scholars in pursuing higher education at Oxford. These students have gone on to study across a wide array of fields, including Geography, Law, Chemistry, Physics, Medicine, Public Policy, and Area Studies.
A Model for UK-India Collaboration
The OICSD exemplifies how philanthropy and academic vision can work together to advance global goals. Supported by industry leaders such as UPL Ltd and the Tata Group, the Centre plays a pivotal role in knowledge exchange aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Its research portfolio spans a wide spectrum, including climate adaptation, energy transition, innovation in healthcare, and biodiversity. It also covers water management, law, human rights, and public policy—making the Centre a vital contributor to both global and national sustainability agendas.
Endorsement from Leadership
Rt. Hon. Patricia Hewitt, Chair of the OICSD’s International Advisory Board, stated, “We are proud to be part of this historic trade agreement between our two great nations. Any gain for India is a gain for the world — and the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development embodies that spirit by promoting ‘brain gain’ for India through its outstanding scholarship programme at Oxford.”
Driving Progress Through Philanthropy
The UK government’s announcement also spotlights the vital role of Indian businesses in realising this collaborative vision. One of the Centre’s most enduring partnerships is with UPL Ltd, a global leader in sustainable agriculture based in India.
The first phase of the partnership focused on the OpenAg Symposium, held annually at Oxford. The event brought together a wide range of stakeholders—from government and academia to think tanks, industry, and media—to explore the intersection of climate change and agriculture. Now, a new phase of collaboration has been launched, backed by a £2.5 million commitment over five years, with a strong emphasis on knowledge exchange.
Building the Future: The Ratan Tata Building
The renewed partnership follows another major milestone—the Tata Group’s significant donation to the OICSD and Somerville College. Their support is enabling the construction of the Ratan Tata Building, which will become the permanent home of the Centre. The landmark facility will stand as a symbol of UK-India collaboration at the heart of one of the world’s most prestigious universities. It will also serve as a dedicated space for advancing sustainable development research and dialogue.
Looking Ahead: Shared Values, Shared Futures
As reported by some.ox.ac.uk, the inclusion of OICSD in the UK-India trade announcement is a timely recognition of its growing influence. As both countries chart a shared path forward through trade, education, and sustainability, the Centre continues to act as a key platform for transforming shared values into impactful action.
Baroness Jan Royall, Principal of Somerville College and Executive Director of OICSD, expressed, “We are honoured to be acknowledged in the UK-India trade deal. Somerville College has a long and proud connection with India, rooted in our values of inclusion, education, and public service. With support from UPL and the Tata Group, we look forward to opening more doors for talented Indian students at Oxford.”
