Panipat Sugar Mill to Build Ethanol Facility in Haryana

Representational Image

Panipat Sugar Mill is set to establish Haryana’s largest ethanol production facility with an investment of approximately ₹200 crore. The new grain-based ethanol plant will have a production capacity of 90,000 litres per day and is expected to be completed within the next fifteen months. Once operational, the facility will significantly enhance the state’s ethanol production capabilities while supporting India’s growing biofuel blending programme.

Ethanol Supply to Support Oil Marketing Companies

The proposed ethanol facility will primarily supply ethanol to Indian Oil Corporation’s Panipat refinery, along with other oil marketing companies. By strengthening domestic ethanol production, the project will contribute to the country’s efforts to increase ethanol blending in petrol and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. As demand for biofuels continues to rise, the new facility is expected to play an important role in ensuring a reliable and sustainable supply of ethanol.

Environment-Friendly Facility with Zero Liquid Discharge Technology

Sustainability remains a key focus of the project. The ethanol plant will be equipped with advanced zero liquid discharge (ZLD) technology, ensuring that no liquid waste is released outside the facility. This environmentally responsible approach will help minimize the plant’s ecological footprint while complying with stringent environmental standards. The project reflects the growing emphasis on sustainable industrial practices within India’s biofuel sector.

Tender Process Underway

Panipat Sugar Mill has completed preparations for the tendering process, and the tender is expected to be floated shortly. Following approval and award of the work order, construction activities will commence with the goal of commissioning the plant within 15 months. The facility will be built on approximately 10.7 acres of land. Local authorities have already finalized the project proposal, which will now be submitted to the High Purchase Committee for approval and contractor selection.

Flexible Feedstock Strategy to Ensure Year-Round Production

The ethanol facility will be designed to operate using multiple agricultural feedstocks, including rice, maize, pearl millet (bajra), and sugarcane molasses. During the sugar mill’s off-season, the facility will process grains such as maize, rice, and pearl millet to maintain continuous ethanol production. During the sugarcane crushing season, sugarcane molasses will serve as the primary feedstock. This flexible approach will help ensure uninterrupted operations and maximize production efficiency throughout the year.

Strengthening Haryana’s Biofuel Ecosystem

According to Navdeep Nain, Managing Director of Panipat Cooperative Sugar Mill, the tender process for the ethanol project will begin shortly. He emphasized that the facility will be the highest-capacity ethanol plant in Haryana and will cater to Indian Oil Corporation as well as other oil companies. As reported by chinimandi.com, with its large-scale production capacity, sustainable design, and multi-feedstock flexibility, the new ethanol plant is expected to strengthen Haryana’s biofuel ecosystem, create additional value for the agricultural sector, and support India’s ambitious renewable energy and ethanol blending targets.
