Port of Antwerp-Bruges reinforced its commitment to India by participating in the Belgian economic mission. A key delegation from the port joined various activities and organized several others, emphasizing India’s importance as a strategic trading partner. The mission aimed to strengthen collaborations for a sustainable future while deepening ties with the world’s fastest-growing economy.
India: A Key Strategic Partner for Port of Antwerp-Bruges
India, the world’s fifth-largest economy, is on track to become the third-largest by 2030. With its rapidly expanding manufacturing sector, India continues to cement its role as the “factory of the world.” Recognizing this potential, Port has prioritized India as a pivotal trading partner.
Trade between India and the port grew by 10% last year, with India’s import volumes through Port of Antwerp-Bruges increasing by over 22%. Beyond its industrial strength, India’s expertise in IT, high-tech, and automotive industries aligns well with the port’s capabilities. Bruges, home to the world’s largest automotive port, offers a strategic entry point for India’s booming automotive sector. Similarly, the chemical hub in Antwerp complements India’s globally dominant pharmaceutical production. India’s ambitions in renewable energy also resonate with the port’s focus on energy transition.
Collaborating on Energy Transition and Green Hydrogen
India’s commitment to renewable energy and green molecules aligns with Port of Antwerp-Bruges’ mission to facilitate the energy transition. To advance the collaboration, the port maintains strong ties with Indian companies leading green energy initiatives.
As the chair of the Belgian Hydrogen Council, Port of Antwerp-Bruges partnered with Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Green H2 India. The agreement commits all three parties to accelerating the energy transition. Belgian and Indian hydrogen ecosystem representatives, along with FIT, will work together to address industry needs, set standards, evaluate new technologies, and exchange expertise on policy development.
A Longstanding Relationship with India
Port of Antwerp-Bruges has maintained a strong presence in India since establishing its Mumbai representation office in 2006. Currently led by Daljit Singh Kohli, the port’s India team focuses on fostering international partnerships and attracting sustainable cargo flows.
The long-term engagement has enabled the port to build robust networks and establish a specialized training center at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Mumbai. As reported by maritimegateway.com, through ongoing collaboration, Port of Antwerp-Bruges continues to enhance its strategic relationship with India, ensuring long-term growth and sustainability in global trade.
