As the global pursuit of alternatives to fossil fuels intensifies, Indian scientists are turning to hydrogen as a promising clean energy source. Sikkim has been identified as a potential source of green hydrogen. In a bid to establish India as a leading hub for green hydrogen, the central government has pinpointed seven states for this initiative.

Sikkim, renowned as the only green state in the country, stands among them. The national green hydrogen mission, aimed at expediting the adoption of green hydrogen as a clean energy source, will facilitate the development of efficient supply chains for transporting and distributing hydrogen.

Dr. Bhaskar Chakraborty, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry at Sikkim Government College, highlighted the state’s commitment to green initiatives across various domains, from pesticide-free vegetable production to stringent measures against plastic use.

The government’s policies prioritize environmental sustainability, exemplified by the absence of industries within township peripheries. As reported by The Statesman, scientists assert that hydrogen technology holds immense promise for extending the benefits of renewable energy beyond the electricity sector, Dr. Chakraborty concluded.
