Technip Bags Contracts for Spain’s Waste-to-Methanol Ecoplanta Project

Technip Energies bagged two engineering services contracts for the development of the
first-of-its-kind waste-to-methanol facility in Europe. Madrid-based Repsol awarded contracts, co-funded by the European Union’s Innovation Fund, to build the Ecoplanta Molecular Recycling Solutions (Ecoplanta) project in El Morell, Spain.

Pioneering Circular Methanol Production

The Ecoplanta facility will convert non-recyclable municipal solid waste (MSW) and biomass into renewable, circular methanol at commercial scale. Technip expects the plant to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3.4 million tons of CO2-equivalent over its first ten years. This marks a significant step toward sustainable chemical production in Europe.

Using gasification technology from Montreal-based Enerkem, the facility will convert up to 400,000 tons of residual MSW annually into approximately 240,000 tons of methanol. This approach transforms previously unrecoverable waste into valuable renewable fuels and chemicals. It also supports the region’s circular economy goals.

Scope of Technip’s Role

As reported by wastetodaymagazine.com, the two contracts awarded to Technip Energies cover the full engineering and integration scope:

*Enerkem Core Process Contract: In collaboration with Enerkem, Technip will oversee the integration of its gasification technology.

*Balance of Plant (BoP) Contract: Ensures the seamless integration of all project units, supporting overall plant functionality.

*Technip will deliver engineering and procurement services and coordinate technology integration, reinforcing the company’s strategic capability in scaling circular solutions.

Building on Strategic Partnership

The contracts follow the strategic collaboration agreement between Technip and Enerkem, signed in 2024. They strengthen the partners’ shared commitment to sustainable and circular chemical production.

“We are honoured to be part of the Ecoplanta project, a landmark in circularity and a breakthrough for waste-based feedstock transformation in Europe,” said Sylvain Cabalery, Senior Vice President, Business Line Sustainable Fuels, Chemicals, and Circularity at Technip.

“These awards highlight our partnership with Enerkem and our commitment to scaling circular solutions. Supporting Europe’s first commercial-scale waste-to-methanol facility demonstrates our dedication to driving innovation and promoting a sustainable future in the Iberian Peninsula,” Cabalery added.
