thyssenkrupp nucera Unveils New BM and Upgraded BiTAC for Better Performance

At the Chlorine Symposium 2025 in Cologne, Germany, thyssenkrupp nucera showcased the latest generation of its BM (bipolar membrane) technology and enhanced BiTAC (bipolar ion exchange membrane process electrolyzer) technology, designed for safe, efficient, and climate-friendly Chlor-Alkali electrolysis. The new BM2.7 v7 and e-BiTAC v7 electrolyzers achieve power consumption below 1,960 kWh per ton of NaOH at 6 kA/m², setting new industry benchmarks.

Breakthrough Performance and Energy Efficiency

The latest BM2.7 v7 and e-BiTAC v7 systems deliver unprecedented energy efficiency, contributing to more sustainable Chlor-Alkali electrolysis. According to Tsuyoshi Hamada, Director of the Okayama Branch, thyssenkrupp nucera Japan Ltd.,

“Uniform pressure distribution on the membrane enables more stable and efficient electrolysis. This optimizes energy consumption while reducing stress on the membrane,” Hamada added. These improvements mark a significant leap in performance, offering customers solutions that combine reliability, safety, and lower operational costs.

Flexible Designs for Diverse Customer Needs

While BiTAC technology follows a filter press concept, BM technology employs a single-element design. This diversity allows thyssenkrupp nucera to meet varied customer requirements while maintaining its position as a global leader in efficient Chlor-Alkali technology.

Both BM2.7 v7 and e-BiTAC v7 provide additional performance enhancements, including:

  • Easier maintenance and installation
  • Membrane-friendly elastic cathode structures
  • Wide range of coating and membrane options
  • Compatibility with existing plants

Innovations That Simplify Maintenance and Installation

thyssenkrupp nucera has introduced new design solutions and tools to shorten assembly and service downtimes. Key innovations include:

  • Resilient Elastic Element Structure (REES) in BM2.7 v7 cathodes, allowing quick installation and simplified replacement
  • New element holders for e-BiTAC v7, optimizing maintenance and installation processes

Together, these innovations enhance operational efficiency and reduce overall maintenance costs.

Advanced Coatings for Enhanced Performance

To further improve performance, thyssenkrupp nucera now offers customized coating options. Working closely with customers, the company selects the most suitable coating from a portfolio of qualified options, ensuring maximum performance and longevity. Since 1989, thyssenkrupp nucera has continuously evolved its BiTAC and BM series, delivering more than three decades of innovation and improvements.

Delivering Solutions Built on 30+ Years of Expertise

Dr. Roland Beckmann, Executive Director Chlor-Alkali at thyssenkrupp nucera, emphasized, “The innovative features in our latest BM and BiTAC generations are a direct response to customer needs. With BM2.7 v7 and e-BiTAC v7, we are setting another milestone in Chlor-Alkali technology, increasing efficiency, reliability, and overall performance of electrolysis plants.” As per the press release, with these latest generations, thyssenkrupp nucera continues to lead the industry, offering cutting-edge solutions for modern Chlor-Alkali electrolysis.
