UPL, a global player in sustainable agricultural solutions, has bagged the SBCOP Award in the Food Systems category at COP30 in Belém, Brazil. The company received this recognition for its Low-Methane Rice Project, an initiative designed to cut methane emissions from rice cultivation across multiple regions. The award forms part of the Sustainable Business COP (SBCOP), a global program led by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) to strengthen private-sector engagement in climate discussions at COP30 and future summits.
Leadership Applauds the Global Recognition
Jai Shroff, Chairman and Group CEO of UPL Group, said the award highlights the company’s commitment to sustainability. He noted that UPL continues to drive projects that help farmers adopt science-based practices that improve productivity while reducing the environmental footprint of rice farming. He added that this recognition further supports UPL’s mission to build a resilient and climate-friendly future for global agriculture.
Project Targets Methane Reduction in Rice Cultivation
UPL’s Low-Methane Rice Project aims to significantly reduce methane emissions by developing and cultivating rice varieties that release less methane. The project also uses advanced agricultural technologies to support farmers in adopting improved practices. Additionally, the initiative aligns with UPL’s flagship #AFarmerCan program, which empowers farmers worldwide with knowledge, tools, and sustainable solutions to adapt to climate challenges.
SBCOP Highlights Global Impact and Scalability
Ricardo Mussa, Chairman of SBCOP, emphasized the scale of participation in this year’s awards. He explained that the program received more than 1,400 project submissions from over 600 companies and institutions worldwide. From these, 670 high-impact and scalable projects were shortlisted. After a rigorous evaluation, UPL’s initiative earned a place among the 48 winning projects. The SBCOP Awards honor initiatives that address climate change, create economic value, and can be replicated at scale.
Strengthening Private-Sector Role in Climate Action
The Sustainable Business COP (SBCOP), led by Brazil’s National Confederation of Industry (CNI), plays a key role in boosting private-sector participation in global climate negotiations. It aims to influence climate policy, support the move toward a low-carbon economy, and drive real action in decarbonization and climate finance.
A Commitment to Sustainable Agriculture
As per the press release, the achievement reinforces UPL’s long-term commitment to reducing environmental impact. It also highlights efforts to enhance farmer resilience and create sustainable value for all stakeholders.
