Vedanta welcomed the unveiling of India’s Aluminium Vision 2047. The visionary document lays out an ambitious plan to transform India into a global aluminium powerhouse, aiming to meet soaring domestic demand and capture 10% of the global aluminium market by 2047.
The document positions aluminium as a strategic metal. It is crucial to India’s progress in renewable energy, electric mobility, green infrastructure, defence, and advanced technologies. With demand projected to grow sixfold, production needs to surge from 4.5 million tons per annum (MTPA) to nearly 37 MTPA—requiring an estimated ₹20 lakh crore in new investments over the next two decades.
Vedanta Sees Aluminium as an Enabler of India’s Future
Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, said, “The aluminium industry today is not merely a supplier of metal; it is a key enabler of India’s journey towards a $30 trillion economy, net-zero targets, and manufacturing competitiveness. The vision document reaffirms that aluminium is the metal of the future, vital for India’s energy independence, global competitiveness, and sustainability goals.”
He stressed the urgency of policy action, calling for decisive reforms to unlock India’s resource potential and accelerate value-added manufacturing. “The moment to act is now,” he said. “With the right ecosystem, India can lead not just in aluminium production, but also in sustainable industrial growth globally,” Kumar added.
Key Enablers: Investment, Innovation, and Policy Support
India holds vast untapped potential in aluminium production. The document highlights that every direct job in aluminium can create 3.7 times more indirect jobs. To meet the projected demand and reduce import dependency, the roadmap recommends the following:
*Boosting bauxite production to 50 MTPA by 2030 and 150 MTPA by 2047
*Promoting circularity through structured scrap collection and recycling
*Enhancing consumption intensity across sectors
*Strengthening quality and efficiency across the entire production value chain
Digital Transformation to Power Growth
The sector is also poised to harness Industry 4.0 technologies, including digitalisation, artificial intelligence, and automation, to enhance productivity and sustainability. Vedanta has already begun integrating these technologies across its operations. It also reaffirms its commitment to working closely with the government. The goal is to make India’s aluminium sector a global benchmark for resilience, sustainability, and competitiveness.
A Call to Action
The Aluminium Vision 2047 charts a bold and necessary path forward. With the right investments and policy momentum, India can not only meet its domestic aluminium needs but also emerge as a global leader in aluminium innovation and manufacturing. As reported by manufacturingtodayindia.com, Vedanta stands ready to partner with all stakeholders to realise this vision. The company aims to contribute actively to India’s journey towards becoming the third-largest economy and a developed nation by 2047.
