WABAG Bags ADB Funded DBO Order in Nepal

VA TECH WABAG (WABAG), a pure-play water technology multinational, has secured a ‘large’ repeat DBO order. The contract was awarded by the Melamchi Water Supply Development Board (MWSDB), Government of Nepal. The project involves developing a state-of-the-art Sundarijal Water Treatment Plant (WTP) with a capacity of 255 Million Liters Per Day (MLD). The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is funding the initiative, which will significantly enhance water supply for the Kathmandu Valley.

Delivering a Modern Water Treatment Facility

WABAG will design and construct the advanced WTP next to the existing Melamchi Water Treatment Plant, which the company successfully delivered in 2017. The new plant will treat water sourced from the Melamchi, Yangri, and Larke Rivers, ensuring compliance with Nepal’s National Drinking Water Quality Standards. The facility will play a vital role in strengthening water security for Kathmandu’s rapidly growing population.

Comprehensive EPC and O&M Responsibilities

The project includes full Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services to be completed within 36 months. After completion, WABAG will operate and maintain the plant for five years, demonstrating its strong lifecycle project delivery capabilities. This long-term engagement ensures reliable water treatment performance and sustainable operations.

Strengthening WABAG’s Leadership in South Asia

Arvind Dullu, Regional Business Head, South and Southeast Asia, stated, “We sincerely thank MWSDB for this repeat order, which reflects their continued confidence in our technical expertise and capabilities. This Large order strengthens WABAG’s strategic presence in Nepal and reaffirms our leadership across the South Asian region.”

Advancing Water Security Through Innovation

As per the company press release, WABAG continues to support critical water infrastructure in Nepal through this project. It also advances the company’s mission to deliver innovative, energy-efficient, and sustainable water solutions. The new Sundarijal WTP will further contribute to safe drinking water access and long-term resilience for the Kathmandu Valley.
