As part of the 15th International Congress of Prospectors and Explorers, proEXPLO 2026 will host four in-person short courses ahead of the main event. The sessions will bring together leading international experts to deliver advanced training in key areas of mining exploration. The program will take place from May 1 to 3 in Lima and will target students, early-career geologists, and mining industry professionals. Participants will gain practical and theoretical insights into geological mapping, economic geology, copper-gold porphyry systems, and skarn-type deposits.

Geological Mapping in Mineral Exploration

On May 1 and 2, exploration geologist Andreas Dietrich will lead the course “Geological Mapping in Mineral Exploration.” He will focus on the practical aspects of geological mapping within exploration programs. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on exercises, participants will move step by step through a complete mapping project. They will cover preparation, fieldwork, and the development of maps, GIS projects, and technical reports. Moreover, Dietrich will incorporate real-world examples from epithermal systems, porphyries, and mineralized breccias to strengthen applied learning.

The Science of Economic Geology

On May 2, experts William X. Chávez Jr. and Roberto Perez Xavier will present “The Science of Economic Geology.” The course will explore the origin and distribution of metallic ore deposits while also examining modern exploration techniques. In addition, the instructors will explain the economic criteria used in mineral resource development. As per the press release, the course will also address current exploration challenges linked to the global transition toward more sustainable economies and outline the evolving skill set required for future geologists.

Advanced Studies in Porphyry Systems

On May 3, international consultant Alan J. Wilson will deliver “Diversity in Alkaline and High-K Calc-Alkaline Copper-Gold Porphyry Deposits.” During this session, he will present a range of alteration and mineralization styles using international case studies. Furthermore, participants will enhance their geological interpretation skills by analyzing drill core samples and outcrop photographs.

Skarns and Related Deposits

Professor Zhaoshan Chang from the Colorado School of Mines will conduct the course “Skarns and Related Deposits.” He will review the defining characteristics, geological controls, and exploration methods of skarn deposits. Additionally, he will examine their relationships with porphyry, carbonate replacement (CRD), and epithermal systems, providing a comprehensive understanding of these interconnected deposit types.

Event Details and Venue

All training sessions will run from 09:00 to 17:00 at the IIMP headquarters (Calle Los Canarios 155–157, Urb. San César II Etapa, La Molina, Lima). Overall, these pre-congress courses will equip participants with essential knowledge and practical skills, thereby enhancing their expertise ahead of proEXPLO 2026.
