MAIRE, Samruk-Kazyna and ACIK Partner to Advance Sustainable Aviation Fuel Development in Kazakhstan

MAIRE has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kazakhstan’s sovereign wealth fund, Samruk-Kazyna, and the Italo-Kazakh Trade Association (ACIK) to explore the development of a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production platform in Kazakhstan.

The partnership will leverage Nextchem’s technology portfolio and expertise, along with MAIRE Group’s execution capabilities, to assess the feasibility of producing SAF in the country.

Focus on HEFA-Based SAF Production

The initiative will evaluate the potential for SAF production using Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) feedstocks available in Kazakhstan. Through this collaboration, the partners aim to support Kazakhstan’s ambition of becoming a regional hub for sustainable aviation fuel.

In addition, the parties will examine infrastructure requirements, engage with key stakeholders, and define a suitable investment framework to support the project’s development.

Nextchem to Lead Technology and Feasibility Assessments

As part of the agreement, Nextchem will identify and advance key technology pathways for the proposed SAF platform. The company will also assess the project’s technical, commercial, and financial viability.

Furthermore, the partners will explore investment opportunities that could potentially be structured within the Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC).

Supporting Kazakhstan’s Position as a Regional SAF Hub

As per the press release, the initiative is expected to strengthen Kazakhstan’s position in the sustainable aviation fuel value chain while fostering deeper industrial and technological cooperation between Kazakhstan, Italy, and Europe.

The project aligns with growing global efforts to decarbonize the aviation sector and develop reliable SAF supply chains across key international transport corridors.

CEO Commentary

Alessandro Bernini, CEO of MAIRE, said the agreement marks an important step toward advancing sustainable aviation fuel production in Kazakhstan.

He noted that Kazakhstan’s strategic location along major Europe-Asia transport routes creates favorable conditions for developing SAF supply chains. According to Bernini, this presents a significant opportunity to combine industrial growth with long-term market potential.

He added that MAIRE, through Nextchem, will contribute its technological expertise to help develop efficient solutions and support Kazakhstan’s ambition to become a regional SAF hub.
