Enervoxa Eyeing India for Rare Earths Project

Canada-based climate technology company Enervoxa is planning to establish a rare earth processing facility in India that will recover valuable rare earth elements from red mud, a byproduct generated during alumina and aluminium production. The proposed project aims to transform industrial waste into a sustainable source of critical minerals, supporting India’s growing focus on resource security and the circular economy.

Discussions Planned with Leading Aluminium Producers

As part of its India strategy, Enervoxa is expected to initiate discussions with leading aluminium manufacturers, including Vedanta, Hindalco Industries, and National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), to explore potential partnerships for the proposed facility. These collaborations could provide access to red mud generated during alumina refining while helping aluminium producers convert industrial waste into valuable resources.

Advanced Technology to Recover Rare Earth Elements

The proposed facility will utilize Enervoxa’s proprietary extraction technology, developed over the past eight years, to recover rare earth elements from red mud. The company is evaluating two potential processing models. It may either complete the entire rare earth extraction and processing within India or produce a rare earth concentrate for further refining at a downstream processing facility. This flexible approach will enable Enervoxa to optimize processing based on commercial and logistical considerations.

Recovering Multiple Value-Added Materials

Beyond rare earth elements, the proposed plant is expected to recover several commercially valuable byproducts from red mud, including Iron oxide, Coagulants, Industrial pigments and Titanium-bearing materials. By extracting multiple valuable materials from industrial waste, the project aims to improve resource efficiency while supporting the development of an integrated critical minerals value chain in India.

Supporting India’s Critical Minerals Strategy

Enervoxa is currently assessing commercial opportunities in India as well as other major alumina-producing regions around the world. The proposed investment aligns with India’s increasing emphasis on securing domestic supplies of critical minerals. It also complements ongoing research into rare earth recovery from red mud being carried out by the Jawaharlal Nehru Aluminium Research Development and Design Centre (JNARDDC) and other organizations under the guidance of NITI Aayog.

Promoting Sustainable Resource Recovery

If implemented, the project could help reduce industrial waste while creating a sustainable source of rare earth elements that are essential for electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, electronics, defence applications, and other advanced technologies.
