Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and the Centre for Science & Environment (CSE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaborative opportunities in biofuels, biomass utilisation, waste-to-resource solutions and circular economy initiatives. The partnership aims to support the development of sustainable and scalable solutions as India accelerates its transition towards cleaner energy and more efficient resource management.
Collaboration Across the Biofuels Value Chain
Under the MoU, BPCL and CSE will identify opportunities across the biofuels value chain, including Compressed Biogas (CBG). The collaboration will cover several areas, including feedstock assessment and supply chain development, biomass and waste resource management, by-product utilisation, technology assessment, pilot and demonstration projects, market development and capacity building and knowledge sharing. By combining their capabilities, the organisations aim to identify practical solutions that can accelerate the development and adoption of bioenergy technologies.
Focus on Biomass and Waste-to-Resource Solutions
The partnership will also examine opportunities to improve the utilisation of biomass and waste resources. In particular, BPCL and CSE will explore technologies and applications that can convert waste streams into useful resources and create more sustainable value chains. The organisations will assess the potential utilisation of biofuel by-products, including Fermented Organic Manure (FOM), digestate, Bio-CO₂ and Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS). These initiatives could help improve resource efficiency while creating additional value from bioenergy production.
Exploring Carbon Credit Opportunities
The MoU also provides scope to explore potential carbon credit opportunities associated with bioenergy projects. As a result, the collaboration could support the development of biofuel projects that deliver both environmental and economic benefits. The partners will also examine opportunities to strengthen sustainable supply chains around bioenergy production.
Combining Industry and Sustainability Expertise
Subhankar Sen, Director (Marketing), BPCL, said the collaboration with CSE represents an important step towards building stronger partnerships and combining complementary capabilities. He emphasised that collaboration can enable organisations to achieve outcomes that may not be possible through individual efforts. The Director General of CSE expressed confidence that the two organisations could leverage their respective strengths. CSE brings expertise in working with municipalities and understanding the CBG ecosystem, while BPCL contributes industrial capabilities and execution strength to help scale promising solutions.
Supporting India’s Clean Energy Transition
The MoU establishes a broad framework for cooperation, knowledge exchange and joint exploration between BPCL and CSE. Specific projects will be undertaken through separate agreements, where mutually agreed, with clearly defined scopes, responsibilities and implementation mechanisms. As per the press release, through this partnership, BPCL and CSE aim to accelerate biofuel development, biomass utilisation, waste-to-resource solutions and circular economy practices, thereby supporting India’s broader transition towards cleaner energy and sustainable resource management.
