ABB India expanded its local manufacturing capabilities with the launch of a new production line for Variable Speed Drive (VSD) modules at its Peenya factory in Bengaluru. The expansion boosts ABB India’s local drive production capacity by about 25%. It also reinforces the company’s commitment to ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives. The new line uses state-of-the-art automation and robotics to meet India’s growing demand for energy-efficient drive solutions. These technologies enhance productivity and reduce energy consumption.
Delivering Energy Efficiency Across Industries
The production line will manufacture large power-rated drives catering to diverse industries such as buildings, data centers, water, cement, and metals. By localizing production, ABB aims to reduce lead times by up to 40%, offering faster, more flexible, and made-to-order drive solutions for customers across India.
“As we mark two decades of drives production in India, this expansion reinforces our strong commitment to advancing local production capabilities and delivering energy-efficient technologies for India’s industries,” said A.R. Madhusudan, Business Line Manager, Drive Products, ABB India. “With our focus on localization, ABB India’s expanded and upgraded drives factory will cater to customers with greater reliability, speed, and agility, leveraging cutting-edge automation,” Madhusudan added.
Smart Manufacturing with Robotics and Industry 4.0 Technologies
Aligned with Industry 4.0 standards, the production line features sensor-based tools that enable accurate component placement, ensuring consistent product quality. Robotics have also been deployed to streamline material movement, reducing manual handling, improving worker safety, and enhancing overall efficiency.
Driving India’s Sustainability and Energy Efficiency Goals
“As India accelerates its sustainability goals, ABB drives are playing a crucial role in enabling energy efficiency across industries,” said Tuomo Hoysniemi, Division President, Drive Products, ABB Motion. “The latest expansion and upgrade of the drives factory in India reflect our focus on advancing local production and technology capabilities in line with the country’s growth ambitions. By building stronger local ecosystems, we are helping industries become more energy efficient while improving customer proximity, enabling them to outrun – leaner and cleaner.”
Celebrating Decades of Innovation and Excellence
The expansion marks two important milestones — 50 years of ABB’s global innovation in variable speed drives and 20 years of drives production excellence in India. Over the years, ABB drives have powered mission-critical projects across India, including metros, airports, and pharmaceutical facilities. They have also supported metal industries, contributing significantly to the nation’s infrastructure and industrial progress.
