Alfa Laval Selected for Electrolyzer Cooling in European Hydrogen Project

Alfa Laval, a global provider of heat transfer, separation and fluid-handling technologies, has been selected to provide electrolyzer cooling equipment for the Onuba H2 project in Spain. Led by Moeve, the project forms a key part of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley and is set to become the largest renewable hydrogen project in Southern Europe. The project marks an important milestone in Europe’s transition towards cleaner energy and low-carbon industrial production.

Largest Electrolyzer Plant in Southern Europe

Located at the La Rábida Energy Park in Huelva, the Onuba H2 project will feature an initial electrolysis capacity of 300 MW, with an option to add another 105 MW. Once operational, the facility is expected to produce approximately 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. Furthermore, Onuba H2 will serve as an industrial anchor for the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley, which is among Spain’s most ambitious renewable hydrogen initiatives. The project will therefore support efforts to decarbonize both the transport and industrial sectors.

Under the agreement, Alfa Laval will supply advanced heat transfer equipment to Moeve for the Onuba H2 electrolyzer plant. The company’s scope includes balance of plant cooling, electrolyzer cooling and gas cooling.

The cooling systems will play a critical role in maintaining stable operating conditions within the electrolyzer plant. Consequently, the technology will help support efficiency, reliability and safety during large-scale renewable hydrogen production.

Supporting Europe’s Energy Transition

Thomas Møller, President of the Energy Division at Alfa Laval, said the company was honoured to contribute its expertise and technology to the Onuba H2 project. He highlighted the role of heat transfer solutions in supporting the decarbonisation of industry and transport while strengthening Europe’s energy security. The collaboration also reinforces Alfa Laval’s growing role in providing technologies for renewable hydrogen production and the wider energy transition.

Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley Gains EU Recognition

The European Commission has recognized the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley as a Project of Common Interest (PCI). This recognition highlights the strategic importance of the initiative for the European Union. In addition, PCI status can facilitate access to public funding, grants and subsidies. As a result, the initiative can accelerate renewable energy development while supporting Europe’s broader objectives for energy security and decarbonisation.

Green Hydrogen to Drive Decarbonisation

Renewable hydrogen is expected to play an important role in achieving the European Union’s CO₂ emissions reduction targets. In particular, green hydrogen can help decarbonize sectors that are difficult to electrify directly, including heavy transport and energy-intensive industries. Against this backdrop, the Onuba H2 project could make a significant contribution to Europe’s climate objectives while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
