Arkema, a global leader in specialty materials, has announced a strategic partnership with Catalyxx, a pioneer in bio-based chemicals. This collaboration aims to accelerate the development of a new, sustainable value chain for bio-based acrylic resins with a significantly lower carbon footprint.

Leveraging Breakthrough Bio-Alcohol Technology

At the core of this partnership lies Catalyxx’s innovative, patented technology that converts bioethanol into bio-alcohols such as bio n-butanol. These bio-alcohols, already validated at a demonstration plant in Seville, Spain, offer a substantially reduced carbon footprint compared to their fossil-based counterparts.

Catalyxx plans to construct the world’s first industrial-scale facility to produce these bio-alcohols. Arkema, in turn, is assessing the use of these renewable feedstocks for large-scale production of bio-based acrylic monomers and resins.

Targeting High-Performance, Sustainable Applications

These next-generation resins will serve high-performance markets such as coatings and adhesives for renewable energy solutions. They will also support e-mobility, comfort-focused living products, and sustainable infrastructure.

As per the Arkema press release, this initiative underscores both companies’ shared vision for a more circular and climate-conscious material industry.

A Shared Commitment to Sustainability

“This partnership is fully aligned with Arkema’s strategy and ambition to deliver ever more sustainable solutions to our customers,” said Richard Jenkins, Senior Vice President of Arkema Coating Solutions. “By working with Catalyxx, we strengthen our ability to reduce the carbon footprint of our materials and meet the growing demands of environmental regulations and green building certifications.”

Joaquin Alarcón, Founder and CEO of Catalyxx, echoed this sentiment: “This project is a major milestone for Catalyxx, and we value the trust and shared vision we’ve built with Arkema over the past few years. This new step reinforces our common interest in advancing sustainable materials and supports the continued development of our first commercial plant.”

Paving the Way for Renewable Alternatives

This project marks a significant step forward in the transition toward more responsible materials. It reinforces Arkema’s long-term commitment to replacing fossil-based raw materials with renewable alternatives—without compromising on performance.
