Atomgrid inaugurated its new Research & Development (R&D) centre at KIADB Industrial Area Jigani, marking a strategic push toward innovation-led growth in the specialty chemicals sector. The move comes at a critical time when global supply chains are shifting away from China, creating a significant opportunity for India to strengthen its position as a reliable alternative.

Strategic Shift: From Manufacturing-Led to R&D-Driven Growth

Unlike many Indian specialty chemical companies that remain manufacturing-focused with limited R&D investment, Atomgrid has adopted a differentiated strategy. First, the company built a strong downstream presence through global registrations, distribution networks, and customer relationships. Now, it is integrating backward into proprietary molecules and formulations. The newly launched R&D centre will serve as the core engine driving this transformation.

Capitalising on Global Supply Chain Realignment

According to Siddharth Gupta, Co-Founder of Atomgrid, India stands at an inflection point in specialty chemicals. He emphasized that global customers are actively seeking alternatives to China but expect partners who can combine innovation with execution. With this facility, Atomgrid aims to deliver proprietary processes for active ingredients and patented formulations tailored for global markets. Notably, the company already has distribution across more than 10 countries, with over half of its revenue generated from exports.

Advanced Capabilities Across the Innovation Lifecycle

The Bengaluru R&D centre is designed to support the complete innovation lifecycle. Its capabilities include route scouting and process development, process optimization and scale-up and technology transfer for commercial manufacturing. Currently, the facility houses fifteen scientists and researchers, with plans to expand to 25 within the next year. Moreover, the focus remains on developing high-purity, cost-efficient active ingredients and patented formulations supported by robust process chemistry and quality systems.

Bridging the Gap Between Lab and Large-Scale Production

Prabhu Dharmalingam, Director – Research & Development, highlighted the company’s mission to bridge the gap between lab-scale innovation and industrial-scale production. He noted that while India has strong chemistry talent, the industry has historically lacked the process rigor and quality infrastructure needed to scale innovations globally. This facility aims to address that gap through consistent, high-quality execution.

Accelerating Global Expansion and IP Development

The R&D centre will play a crucial role in accelerating Atomgrid’s commercialisation pipeline. It will also support the company’s expanding global registration program, with filings already active in more than ten countries. Over the next five years, Atomgrid plans to build a strong intellectual property portfolio through patents and proprietary processes, positioning the Bengaluru facility as a key hub for specialty chemicals innovation.

Strengthening India’s Role in Specialty Chemicals

The R&D centre reinforces Atomgrid’s commitment to innovation-led growth. As per the press release, by combining advanced research capabilities with global market access, the company is well-positioned to capitalize on shifting supply chains and establish itself as a key player in the global specialty chemicals landscape.
