Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL) awarded a key contract to Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for critical process packages in its upcoming coal gasification project. This development marks a major step in advancing India’s coal-to-chemicals capabilities.

Scope Includes Ammonia and Ammonium Nitrate Units

Under the agreement, L&T will handle essential process units, including the ammonia synthesis package and the ammonium nitrate production unit. These components are crucial for converting coal-derived syngas into high-value chemical products. As a result, the project will enable efficient utilization of coal resources while supporting downstream chemical manufacturing.

Strengthening India’s Energy and Chemical Strategy

The initiative aligns with India’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on imported natural gas. At the same time, it supports the government’s push to boost domestic production of chemicals and fertilizers through coal gasification technologies.

L&T to Deliver EPC Expertise

L&T is expected to execute the project on an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) basis. Leveraging its extensive experience in complex industrial and petrochemical projects, the company will ensure efficient design, execution, and delivery of the process units.

Driving Growth in Coal-to-Chemicals Infrastructure

The project underscores rising investments in downstream coal-to-chemicals infrastructure. Products such as ammonia and ammonium nitrate play a vital role across industries, including fertilizers, mining, and industrial applications. As reported by globalflowcontrol.com, the contract not only strengthens India’s industrial self-reliance but also accelerates the development of a robust coal gasification ecosystem.
