Birla Carbon, a major global manufacturer of high-quality carbon materials, is expanding its focus on specialty materials with a portfolio of conductive carbon solutions for advanced batteries and other high-performance applications. The company is developing conductive carbon materials to address the growing performance requirements of modern energy-storage technologies, including lithium-ion and next-generation battery systems.
Conductive Carbon Supports Battery Performance
Conductive carbon additives play an important role in battery electrodes by creating efficient pathways for electron movement. As a result, the right conductive material can support faster charging, improved high-rate performance and longer battery cycle life. In addition, conductive additives can help manufacturers improve electrode processing and achieve more efficient battery production. Against this backdrop, Birla Carbon will showcase its conductive carbon portfolio at The Battery Show North America 2026, scheduled for October 12–15 at Huntington Place in Detroit, Michigan. The company will exhibit at Booth 3029.
Portfolio Targets Next-Generation Battery Technologies
Birla Carbon has expanded its specialty materials capabilities over the past several years, building a portfolio that includes conductive carbon blacks and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). At the event, the company will present its Conductex™ i conductive carbon black grades, Nanocyl™ carbon nanotubes and carbon black-CNT blend formulations. These materials are designed for a broad range of conductive applications. According to the company, the solutions combine high purity, strong electrical conductivity and uniform dispersibility. Furthermore, Conductex™ i carbon black grades can help reduce solvent consumption and energy requirements during battery electrode manufacturing, potentially lowering production costs.
Supporting Next-Generation Cell Chemistries
Birla Carbon is also targeting emerging battery technologies as manufacturers seek higher performance and greater supply-chain resilience. The company’s conductive carbon portfolio is being used in the development of next-generation cell technologies, including lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP), sodium-ion, solid-state and metal-air batteries. Shashank Awasthi, President, Specialty Materials, Birla Carbon, said electrification is creating new performance requirements across the materials value chain. He added that the company is combining its carbon-material expertise with its growing specialty portfolio to help customers address these requirements.
Enabling Faster Charging and Longer Cycle Life
For established lithium-ion battery manufacturers, increasing demand for fast charging, extended cycle life and supply-chain resilience is driving the need for advanced conductive materials. Meanwhile, emerging cell technologies require conductive additives that can meet increasingly demanding formulation and processing requirements. Birla Carbon’s Conductex™ i carbon blacks and Nanocyl™ carbon nanotubes are designed to support these evolving applications.
Global Manufacturing and Technical Expertise
Birla Carbon is leveraging its global manufacturing footprint, technical capabilities and customer-focused approach to develop conductive materials tailored to specific performance and processing requirements. The company offers conductive carbon additives for applications involving charge acceptance, higher battery capacity, dry electrode coating and solid-state batteries. As per the press release, as demand for advanced energy-storage technologies continues to increase, Birla Carbon aims to help battery and materials manufacturers improve performance while maintaining quality, consistency and supply reliability.
