Celanese Corporation, a global specialty materials and chemicals company, partnered with Röchling Industrial, a leading plastics processor and part of the Röchling Group, to advance the use of lower-carbon polyoxymethylene (POM) materials in industrial stock shape applications. Under the collaboration, Röchling Industrial has procured Celanese’s POM ECO-C material for selected stock shape applications. The initiative supports Röchling’s sustainability strategy by introducing circular and lower-carbon raw materials into its plastics product portfolio.
CCU Technology Converts Captured CO₂ into High-Performance POM
Celanese uses its patented Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) process to convert captured carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions into chemical building blocks for manufacturing high-performance POM polymers. Through a mass balance approach, the process incorporates circular feedstock content while helping reduce the product carbon footprint (PCF) of the resulting materials. The POM ECO-C grades are designed to enable manufacturers to adopt more sustainable materials without compromising essential performance characteristics. These include rigidity, dimensional stability, sliding properties and wear resistance, which make POM suitable for demanding industrial applications.
Lower-Carbon Materials Support Scope 3 Emissions Reduction
By making POM ECO-C solutions available at scale, Celanese aims to help customers reduce the carbon footprint of their products and advance their circularity objectives. Importantly, manufacturers can integrate these materials into existing applications without making significant changes to established product designs, manufacturing processes or performance requirements. This approach offers industrial customers a practical route to incorporating lower-carbon engineered plastics while supporting their Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.
Celanese and Röchling Highlight Sustainable Plastics Innovation
Todd Elliott, Senior Vice President, Celanese Engineered Materials, said Röchling’s adoption of POM ECO-C demonstrates the practical potential of CCU technology in delivering lower-carbon engineered materials across multiple industries, including applications with demanding performance requirements. He highlighted Celanese’s integrated technology, global POM manufacturing footprint and ECO-C product portfolio as key capabilities that enable the company to deliver sustainable material solutions at scale. These solutions help customers advance circularity initiatives and reduce product carbon footprints without compromising material performance or quality. Florian Helmich, Chief Sales Officer and Chief Technology Officer, Röchling Industrial, described Celanese POM ECO-C as an innovative approach to improving sustainability in the chemical and plastics industries. He emphasised that capturing CO₂ that would otherwise enter the atmosphere and reusing it as a raw material can help reduce dependence on virgin fossil-based resources.
CO₂-Based Feedstocks Open New Opportunities for Sustainable Plastics
The collaboration highlights the growing role of carbon capture and utilisation technologies in developing more sustainable chemical and polymer products. By converting captured CO₂ into valuable chemical feedstocks, manufacturers can explore alternatives to conventional fossil-based raw materials while maintaining the performance standards required for industrial applications. As reported by businesswire.com, the adoption of POM ECO-C by Röchling Industrial demonstrates how material suppliers and plastics processors can work together to accelerate the commercial use of circular, lower-carbon engineering plastics.
