Coromandel International Limited (CIL), an agri-solutions provider, signed an agreement with Veolia Water Technologies and Solutions (India) Pvt. Ltd. to expand its seawater desalination capacity from 6 million litres per day (MLD) to 9 MLD. The company had originally commissioned its 6 MLD desalination plant in 2023 to reduce dependence on surface water and enhance operational resilience.
With this capacity expansion, Coromandel is reinforcing its sustainability agenda by adopting innovative and resource-efficient water solutions. This will ensure long-term water security for its operations.
Formalising a Strategic Partnership
The agreement was signed by S. Sankarasubramanian, Managing Director and CEO, Coromandel International Ltd., and Gopal Madabhushi, Senior Vice President – Business Unit Leader (India and South Asia), Veolia, in the presence of senior leadership from Coromandel.
Coromandel and Veolia will collaborate through a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model. Coromandel will provide the required infrastructure support, while Veolia will contribute its global expertise in water treatment technology, machinery, and operations. As part of the agreement, Veolia will continue to operate the expanded desalination facility, ensuring high efficiency, reliability, and sustainability over the long term.
Enhancing Water Security at Vizag Facility
Once operational, the upgraded desalination plant will meet 60% to 70% of Coromandel’s total water requirement at its Vizag facility. The substantial increase in water self-reliance will significantly reduce the company’s dependence on external water sources. It will also improve operational resilience and future-proof manufacturing activities against potential water scarcity.
Leadership Perspectives
S. Sankarasubramanian, MD and CEO, Coromandel International, said, “Coromandel and Veolia’s partnership reflects a shared vision of sustainable transformation in industrial ecosystems. This initiative further strengthens Coromandel’s leadership in responsible manufacturing and reaffirms our commitment to environmental stewardship and efficient resource management.”
Advancing Coromandel’s Sustainability Vision
This expansion is a vital step in Coromandel’s broader environmental strategy to align business growth with sustainable infrastructure development. By strengthening its water self-reliance, the company is safeguarding its operations from future water challenges. It is also setting new benchmarks for sustainability in India’s agri-inputs and manufacturing sectors. As per the press release, through this collaboration, Coromandel demonstrates the power of strategic partnerships and innovative technologies. The initiative drives responsible industrial growth while supporting India’s journey towards a sustainable and water-secure future.
