Government to Support TERI for Establishing Centre for Energy Transition

The minister of power and new and renewable energy, has revealed plans for the creation of a centre for Energy Transition, a joint effort between the government of India and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). The initiative was announced by the minister during the 23rd edition of the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS), hosted by TERI in New Delhi on February 9. The minister outlined the institute’s role in charting sustainable energy pathways and driving innovation within the renewable energy sector.

The minister emphasized on India’s pivotal role in climate action and energy transformation. He highlighted India’s significant strides, noting that 44% of the nation’s power generation capacity stems from
non-fossil-fuel sources, with over 180 GW out of a total capacity of 427 GW derived from renewables. The minister underscored India’s unparalleled pace of energy transition, citing the country’s unique approach of issuing bids for round-the-clock renewable energy projects.

The minister stressed the need for a shift in public discourse regarding carbon emissions. He pointed out that while developed nations historically relied on fossil fuels, contributing to 77% of legacy carbon emissions, India, with 17% of the global population, accounts for only 3% of cumulative global carbon emissions. He emphasized the urgency for developed countries to reduce emissions, recognizing the necessity for developing nations to have the carbon space required for growth.
