Grasim Industries Limited’s Advanced Materials Division and its renewable energy arm, Aditya Birla Renewables Limited (ABRen), partnered with Suzlon Energy Limited to develop, commercialize and scale wind turbines equipped with recyclable blade technology in India. The companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo 2026, marking an important step towards promoting circularity in the wind energy sector. Through the collaboration, the three companies aim to accelerate the adoption of sustainable end-of-life solutions for wind turbine blades and advance resource efficiency across the renewable energy industry.

Addressing Wind Turbine Blade Recycling Challenges

Conventional wind turbine blades primarily use thermoset composite materials, which are difficult to recycle once they reach the end of their operational life. Consequently, many discarded blades end up in landfills or undergo incineration, creating environmental challenges. To address this issue, Grasim will supply its Recyclamine® epoxy technology, which enables the chemical recycling of composite materials at the end of their service life. This process allows manufacturers to recover valuable composite constituents and reuse them in new applications. By facilitating material recovery and reuse, the technology supports circular economy principles, reduces waste and minimizes the environmental footprint of wind energy projects.

Three-Way Collaboration to Scale Recyclable Blade Technology

Under the agreement, each company will play a specific role in developing and demonstrating recyclable wind turbine blades. Suzlon Energy: As the wind turbine original equipment manufacturer (OEM), Suzlon will integrate Grasim’s Recyclamine® technology into the manufacturing of recyclable wind turbine blades.

Aditya Birla Renewables: ABRen will deploy a wind turbine equipped with recyclable blades at one of its selected project sites to demonstrate the technology’s commercial viability under real-world operating conditions.

Grasim Industries: The company will supply its Recyclamine® epoxy technology, enabling the development of chemically recyclable composite blades.

Furthermore, the partners will jointly explore opportunities to expand commercialization and market adoption of recyclable blade-enabled wind turbines across India and other mutually agreed markets.

Industry Leaders Highlight Commitment to Circular Wind Energy

Rajesh Balakrishnan, Chief Executive Officer, Advanced Materials, Grasim Industries Ltd., said, “This collaboration marks an important step toward building a truly circular wind energy ecosystem. By combining the Recyclamine® technology with Suzlon’s manufacturing expertise and ABRen’s renewable energy ambitions, we are demonstrating that sustainability and innovation can go hand in hand. Together, we aim to accelerate the adoption of recyclable wind turbine blades and set new benchmarks for resource efficiency in the wind industry.” Girish Tanti, Co-Founder, Suzlon Group, highlighted the importance of integrating circularity into renewable energy solutions. He said, “The future of renewable energy lies not just in generating clean power, but in building truly circular solutions. At Suzlon, we are advancing this vision through our flagship S144 platform, which has one of the world’s lowest carbon footprints among wind turbines, and by working towards making all future turbines recyclable within the next three to four years. This partnership brings together innovation and scale to accelerate material circularity, with the potential to enable significant CO₂ savings. It is another step towards ensuring that every turbine we build delivers lasting value for both the planet and future generations.”

Amit Jain, Chief Executive Officer, Aditya Birla Renewables Limited, said, “At ABRen, we believe the energy transition must be accompanied by innovation that enhances environmental sustainability. This partnership is an important step toward addressing the end-of-life challenges associated with wind turbine blades and advancing circularity within the renewable energy sector.”

Advancing Sustainable Wind Energy in India

The partnership between Grasim, Suzlon and Aditya Birla Renewables represents a significant step towards addressing the growing challenge of wind turbine blade disposal. By combining advanced recyclable materials, manufacturing capabilities and renewable energy deployment, the collaboration aims to demonstrate the practical application of circular economy principles in wind energy. As per company press release, the initiative could help establish a more sustainable approach to wind turbine manufacturing while supporting India’s broader renewable energy and environmental sustainability objectives.
