SOPAN Group, in collaboration with VO Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA), has begun construction of India’s first green methanol bunkering and refuelling facility at VOC Port, Tamil Nadu. The project marks a significant step in advancing sustainable maritime infrastructure in the country.

Inauguration Marks Milestone in Green Shipping

The pilot-scale project includes the construction of a 750 m³ green methanol storage and bunkering terminal along with advanced refuelling systems. SOPAN Group, acting as the EPC contractor, is executing the project under the Government of India’s Maritime India Vision 2030.

Advancing India’s Green Port Mission

VOCPA Chairperson Susanta Purohit highlighted the government’s commitment to NetZero goals, stating that the project aligns with VOCPA’s broader Green Port mission. Aniruddha Kadvekar, Director, SOPAN, emphasized that the facility will enable ships to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 95%. He added that this positions India as a global leader in green shipping and a preferred sustainable maritime hub.

A Step Toward Sustainable Maritime Growth

As reported by projectstoday.com, the green methanol bunkering facility represents a transformative initiative for India’s shipping sector. It combines innovation, sustainability, and strategic infrastructure development. By adopting low-emission fuels and modern refuelling systems, VOC Port is taking a big step forward.
