GS Caltex has signed a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Veolia, a global leader in environmental solutions, to enhance sustainability and modernise utility operations at its Yeosu Complex in South Korea. The agreement, announced by Saehong Hur, Board Chair and CEO of GS Caltex and Vice Chairman of GS Group, marks an important step toward improving energy efficiency, environmental performance, and digital transformation at one of the company’s major industrial facilities.
Expanding Collaboration with a Global Environmental Leader
The partnership was formalised on April 3 following the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to South Korea, reflecting stronger cooperation between the two countries in sustainable technologies. Until now, GS Caltex and Veolia had collaborated mainly on specific water treatment projects. However, the new agreement expands the relationship into a broader strategic partnership focused on long-term sustainability initiatives.
Addressing Environmental and Energy Challenges
GS Caltex and Veolia plan to jointly develop integrated environmental, energy, and digital solutions. The collaboration will follow a Triple-X transformation framework, which includes Business Transformation (BX), Digital and AI Transformation (DAX) and Green Transformation (GX). Together, these initiatives aim to optimise operational efficiency, accelerate digital innovation, and strengthen environmental sustainability at the Yeosu Complex.
Business Transformation to Optimise Utility Operations
Under the Business Transformation (BX) pillar, the two companies will explore ways to integrate and optimise wastewater treatment operations within the Yeosu Complex. In addition, they will examine opportunities to enhance utility synergies with nearby industrial facilities, which could improve resource efficiency and reduce operational costs. By streamlining these processes, GS Caltex aims to increase productivity while strengthening its overall competitiveness.
Digital and AI Transformation for Smart Plant Operations
Digital innovation is another key focus of the partnership. Through the Digital & AI Transformation (DAX) initiative, Veolia will introduce its AI-powered digital solutions to improve operational management at the Yeosu Complex. These technologies will enable real-time monitoring and analysis of utility data, advanced process optimisation, early detection of operational anomalies and predictive maintenance systems. By implementing these solutions, GS Caltex plans to accelerate its transition toward a smart manufacturing plant powered by intelligent digital systems.
Green Transformation to Strengthen Sustainability
The Green Transformation (GX) component of the partnership will focus on deploying eco-friendly technologies developed by Veolia to improve environmental performance. Key initiatives will include, wastewater reuse systems, upgrades to industrial cooling systems and resource recovery technologies. Through these measures, GS Caltex aims to reduce carbon emissions, conserve resources, and support the development of a circular economy.
Strengthening ESG and Sustainable Competitiveness
According to CEO Saehong Hur, the collaboration with Veolia will play a crucial role in transforming the company’s operations and advancing its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy. He emphasised that the partnership will act as a catalyst for improving overall utility operations while elevating GS Caltex’s ESG management to a higher level. As per the press release, by combining Veolia’s global expertise in environmental solutions with GS Caltex’s industrial capabilities, the two companies aim to build a more sustainable, efficient, and technologically advanced energy and chemical production system at the Yeosu Complex.
