HIF Global and German eFuel One GmbH have signed a Heads of Agreement (HoA) for the long-term offtake of e-methanol. Under this framework, HIF Global will supply approximately 100,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually to German eFuel One, strengthening the availability of clean fuels and supporting the global energy transition.
Framework for Long-Term Collaboration
As per the HIF press release, this agreement lays out the key commercial terms that both companies will use to negotiate a final definitive offtake contract. The e-methanol is expected to be sourced from HIF’s Paysandú project in Uruguay, giving German eFuel One early access to initial production volumes as the global e-methanol market scales.
Meeting Standards for Clean Fuel
To ensure high environmental performance, the e-methanol delivered under this arrangement will meet the International Methanol Producers and Consumers Association (IMPCA) specifications and be certified under EU RED III RFNBO standards. These standards help guarantee the fuel’s credentials as a sustainable drop-in alternative.
Comments from Industry Leaders
HIF Global’s Chief Commercial Officer, Diego Fettweis, highlighted that the agreement expands the reach of sustainable fuels and supports decarbonization in both transport and industrial sectors by leveraging HIF’s experience and global project portfolio. Meanwhile, Christian Hanke, CEO of German eFuel One, emphasized that this supply agreement lays the foundation for industrial-scale production of e-Fuels and enhances energy security, especially through the planned delivery hub at the Port of Hamburg.
Fuel Versatility and Market Impact
Importantly, e-methanol — produced by combining green hydrogen with recycled carbon dioxide — can be used in existing engines and infrastructure without modification. This flexibility makes it suitable not only for maritime and industrial use but also for conversion into other sustainable fuels such as e-gasoline for vehicles and e-SAF for aviation.
Next Steps and Future Outlook
Once the definitive offtake agreement is finalized and international production capacities scale up, HIF Global and German eFuel One will put in place a long-term framework for the annual supply of certified e-methanol. This development supports broader efforts to decarbonize key transport sectors and accelerate the adoption of greener fuel alternatives.
