Honeywell Technologies will provide advanced process technologies, licensing, engineering, proprietary equipment, catalysts and technical support to help Hengyi Industries improve operational efficiency and reliability while increasing higher-value petrochemical production at its Pulau Muara Besar (PMB) facility in Brunei. The collaboration will support Phase II of the PMB petrochemical project, which includes major hydrocracking, aromatics and dehydrogenation units. Once completed, Phase II is expected to expand the facility’s crude-processing capacity to approximately 20 million metric tonnes per year.

Advanced Technologies to Boost Petrochemical Production

Honeywell Technologies UOP will deploy a portfolio of process solutions to support the expansion. These technologies are designed to help Hengyi improve refining performance, optimise feedstock utilisation and increase the production of higher-value petrochemicals.

The planned technology deployment includes:

CCR Platforming™: Supports catalytic reforming and the production of high-value products.

Unicracking™: Enables hydrocracking to convert heavier feedstocks into more valuable products.

Unionfining™: Supports feedstock treatment and refining processes.

Butamer™ and C4 Oleflex™: Provide solutions for relevant refining and petrochemical processing applications.

Parex™ technology: Forms part of a comprehensive aromatics complex using light desorbent technology.

Together, these solutions will support the development of large-scale hydrocracking, aromatics and dehydrogenation facilities, strengthening PMB’s integrated refining and petrochemical operations.

Honeywell Builds on Phase I Collaboration

Honeywell Technologies and Hengyi Industries have already collaborated on Phase I of the PMB project. During this stage, Honeywell supplied process technologies, engineering design, key equipment, catalysts and adsorbents, operator training, and technical services for start-up and ongoing operations. Building on this experience, the companies aim to strengthen operational performance and improve the integration of refining and petrochemical production during Phase II.

Rajesh Gattupalli, President of Honeywell Technologies UOP, said, “With more than 100 years in the energy sector and technologies deployed in hundreds of aromatics complexes and process units, we help refining customers get more from their existing assets, feedstocks and resources. Our solutions are designed to continue in helping PMB improve efficiency and reliability while positioning them to diversify into higher-value petrochemicals to meet evolving market demands.”

Supporting Brunei’s Downstream Energy Industry

The PMB expansion is expected to strengthen Brunei’s ability to derive greater value from its oil and gas resources while expanding its downstream petrochemical industry. According to Chen Liancai, CEO of Hengyi Industries Sdn. Bhd., the successful implementation of Honeywell Technologies’ solutions during Phase I helped strengthen the company’s integrated refining and petrochemical value chain.

He said, “The successful implementation of Honeywell Technologies solutions in Phase I helped Hengyi further strengthen its integrated refining and petrochemical value chain while supporting Brunei’s efforts to create greater value from its oil and gas resources and expand downstream industries. We believe deeper cooperation between our companies will support the development of Brunei’s energy and petrochemical sector while creating value for regional economic growth.”

Strengthening Integrated Refining and Petrochemical Operations

Through Phase II, Hengyi Industries aims to expand its production of higher-value petrochemicals while improving efficiency and reliability across its operations. Meanwhile, Honeywell’s process technologies and engineering expertise will support the development of large-scale refining and petrochemical facilities. As per the press release, the collaboration highlights the growing importance of advanced process technologies in helping refiners optimise resources, diversify product portfolios and strengthen their position in global petrochemical markets.
