The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee inaugurated the Ashok Soota Molecular Medicine Facility at its Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering (BSBE), marking a major milestone in strengthening India’s biomedical research infrastructure. The initiative aligns with national healthcare priorities while also supporting global scientific advancements in translational medicine. The facility was inaugurated by Ashok Soota, a distinguished alumnus, in the presence of Prof. K. K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, along with faculty members, researchers, and industry representatives.

A State-of-the-Art Platform for Translational Biomedical Research

Designed as an integrated and advanced research platform, the Ashok Soota Molecular Medicine Facility will significantly enhance capabilities in drug discovery, biomolecular research, and next-generation diagnostics.

Importantly, the facility enables researchers to seamlessly move from understanding disease mechanisms and identifying biomolecular targets to validating lead molecules and developing assays. By integrating expertise across protein science, molecular and cell biology, structural biology, biophysics, and advanced imaging, the facility supports high-impact research. As a result, it will drive innovation across critical disease areas such as cancer, neurological disorders, metabolic diseases, and infectious diseases.

Cutting-Edge Infrastructure and Advanced Instrumentation

The facility houses a comprehensive suite of high-end instruments that support end-to-end workflows in molecular characterization and translational research. These include:

*Automated Protein Purification Systems (AKTA and Biorad/AKTA)

*HPLC and UPLC systems

*GC-MS systems

*Iso-Thermal Calorimeter (ITC)

*Flow Cytometer

*Upright Confocal Microscope

*Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS)

Protein Crystallization Robot

*CD Spectrometer

*High-Pressure Homogenizer/Cell Disruptor

Together, these advanced analytical platforms significantly strengthen IIT Roorkee’s capabilities in molecular diagnostics, biomolecular interaction studies, structural validation, and assay development.

Accelerating Innovation in Healthcare and Precision Medicine

Pant emphasized that the facility will substantially enhance the institute’s research ecosystem. He highlighted that integrating advanced infrastructure with interdisciplinary expertise will accelerate translational research and contribute to national priorities such as healthcare innovation, precision medicine, and scientific self-reliance.

Strengthening Research Ecosystems and Industry Collaboration

Ashok Soota underscored the importance of building robust research ecosystems that translate scientific discoveries into real-world impact. He noted that while India has immense scientific talent, it is equally important to provide world-class infrastructure and collaborative platforms to enable innovation at scale. Furthermore, he expressed confidence that the facility will enhance capabilities in molecular diagnostics, precision medicine, and drug discovery, contributing to both national and global healthcare solutions.

A Collaborative Hub for Interdisciplinary Research

Pravindra Kumar, Head of the Institute Instrumentation Center and Ashok Soota Institute Chair Professor, highlighted that the facility will serve as a shared research platform for faculty, scholars, and industry partners. Consequently, it will strengthen IIT Roorkee’s ability to undertake globally competitive, interdisciplinary research in molecular medicine and translational biosciences.
