India’s pharmaceutical and life sciences sector is rapidly transforming into a global innovation hub, with nearly ten novel drug molecules developed over the past decade, according to a joint report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and HealthKois. The report highlights India’s growing focus on scientific discovery while emphasizing the need to strengthen funding and research infrastructure to sustain long-term growth.
Companies are increasingly adopting diverse innovation strategies to compete globally. Notable examples include Glenmark Pharmaceuticals’ out-licensing agreement with AbbVie, which secured an upfront payment of US$700 million along with potential milestone payments of up to US$1.2 billion. Meanwhile, startups such as ImmunoACT are advancing cutting-edge CAR-T cell therapies, demonstrating India’s expanding capabilities in advanced biotechnology.
Drug Discovery Pipeline Expands Significantly
The report reveals a remarkable increase in India’s pharmaceutical innovation pipeline. Drug discovery programmes have grown by 1.5 times, reaching more than 1,095 programmes across 195 companies. At the same time, pharmaceutical patent families originating from India increased from approximately 716 in 2015 to 2,995 in 2024, raising India’s share of global pharma patents from 3-4% to nearly 10%. According to the report, this growth reflects not only higher volumes but also a significant improvement in the quality and impact of innovation.
Government Support Strengthens the Innovation Ecosystem
The report identifies over US$5 billion in government funding for early-stage and translational research as a major catalyst. In addition, stronger industry-academia collaborations, enhanced technology transfer mechanisms, and regulatory reforms have significantly improved the innovation landscape. Importantly, regulatory changes have reduced drug development approval timelines from 180-270 days to just 60-120 days, enabling companies to bring innovative therapies to market faster. Furthermore, world-class research and manufacturing hubs such as Genome Valley and Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP) continue to provide shared infrastructure that supports pharmaceutical and biotechnology innovation.
Breakthrough Therapies Showcase India’s Research Capabilities
India is already witnessing encouraging examples of successful lab-to-market translation. Among the notable breakthroughs is BIRSA 101, India’s first indigenously developed CRISPR-based therapeutic, representing a major milestone in gene-editing technology. Another significant achievement is NexCAR19, an indigenous CAR-T cell therapy priced at nearly one-tenth of comparable international treatments, making advanced cancer therapies substantially more affordable. These developments underscore India’s growing capability to develop globally competitive, high-impact healthcare innovations.
Investment in Biotech Continues to Rise
Investor confidence in India’s life sciences sector is also strengthening. Private equity and venture capital investments in pharmaceuticals increased 2.1 times over the past five years, reaching US$731 million during the financial year ending March 2026. Simultaneously, the country’s biotechnology startup ecosystem expanded from approximately 1,500 startups to 2,400, reflecting growing entrepreneurial activity and increased interest in healthcare innovation.
Funding and Clinical Research Gaps Remain
Despite this progress, the report highlights several challenges that continue to limit India’s full innovation potential.mIndia currently accounts for only around 4% of global clinical trials, while annual pharmaceutical R&D expenditure remains between US$2-3 billion, significantly lower than the US$70-75 billion invested annually in the United States. Addressing these funding and research gaps will be essential for India to establish itself as a leading global pharmaceutical innovation centre.
