In March 2024, natural gas production in India amounted to 3,138 million standard cubic meters (mmscm), representing a 6.2% increase from March 2023, as reported by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell. The amount of gas available for sale post-production reached 2,571 mmscm, showing a growth of 5.7% compared to the previous year. This surge is attributed to enhanced outputs from companies such as ONGC, OIL, and various partnerships.

Imports of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in March 2024 were slightly reduced by 1.1%, totalling 2,522 mmscm, suggesting a balanced dependency on both imported and locally produced natural gas. The overall gas available for commercial use was recorded at 5,093 mmscm, a 2.2% rise year-on-year.

Gas consumption in March stood at 6,066 mmscm. The breakdown of this consumption is as follows: fertilizers (28%), city gas distribution networks (20%), power plants (11%), refineries (11%), and petrochemical industries (4%).

As reported by ETEnergyworld.com, notably, refineries recorded the highest growth, increasing consumption by 49% from April 2023 to March 2024. Additionally, City Gas Distribution and the fertilizer sectors witnessed consumption growth of 12% and 8%, respectively, during the same period.
