India has reached a historic milestone in its nuclear energy journey as the Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR) at Kalpakkam successfully attains criticality. This crucial achievement marks a major step forward in the country’s three-stage nuclear power programme, which aims to secure long-term energy independence and sustainability. With this development, India strengthens its commitment to clean, reliable, and self-reliant energy, while advancing its strategic capabilities in advanced nuclear technology.
Kirloskar Brothers Limited’s Critical Engineering Contribution
At the centre of the milestone is the advanced engineering contribution of Kirloskar Brothers Limited (KBL). The company has designed and supplied the Primary and Secondary Heat Transport Pumps, which serve as critical components of the reactor system. These pumps are the only rotating equipment within the reactor, making their performance vital for safe and reliable plant operation.
Each pump represents a remarkable engineering achievement. Weighing approximately 135 tonnes, they are manufactured using specialised exotic materials capable of withstanding extreme operating conditions. Moreover, the pumps are engineered to handle liquid sodium at temperatures exceeding 500°C, demonstrating exceptional precision, durability, and technological innovation.
Among the World’s Few Nuclear Pump Manufacturers
Globally, only a handful of companies possess the capability to design and manufacture such advanced nuclear-grade pumping systems. Kirloskar Brothers Limited stands proudly among just four companies worldwide with this expertise. The accomplishment highlights India’s growing technological strength and strongly aligns with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). At the same time, it reflects KBL’s century-long legacy of engineering excellence and contribution to nation-building.
Advanced Circulating Water Pumps for Efficient Cooling
In addition to reactor pumps, KBL has also supplied Concrete Volute Circulating Water Pumps for the nuclear power plant. These pumps have been developed using advanced seismic analysis and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to ensure optimal performance and reliability. The pumps are seamlessly integrated with KBL’s compact intake system, enabling efficient and reliable seawater management. Each pump delivers an impressive 9,500 litres of seawater per second, ensuring consistent cooling performance. Due to their high reliability, the system eliminates the need for a standby pump, improving operational efficiency. Notably, this marks the first time in the world that such pumps have been used for circulating water applications in a fast breeder nuclear reactor.
Strengthening Safety with Advanced Fire Protection Systems
Beyond pumping solutions, Kirloskar Brothers Limited has also implemented a comprehensive firefighting system for the plant. The advanced safety infrastructure helps protect critical reactor operations and significantly enhances overall plant resilience and safety preparedness.
Four Decades of Contribution to India’s Nuclear Programme
KBL’s association with India’s nuclear sector spans over four decades. During this period, the company has consistently delivered critical pumping technologies and fluid management solutions for major nuclear facilities across the country. The Kalpakkam project once again demonstrates how “Make in India” engineering solutions are supporting India’s ambition to build self-reliant nuclear infrastructure.
Collaboration Behind a National Achievement
The landmark achievement reflects the collaborative efforts of several key organisations, including Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited (BHAVINI), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and numerous technical and industrial partners.
Powering India’s Energy-Secure Future
As India continues to expand its nuclear energy capabilities, milestones such as the Kalpakkam Fast Breeder Reactor criticality represent significant progress toward long-term energy security, sustainability, and technological leadership. As per the press release, through its engineering expertise and innovation, KBL remains committed to supporting India’s strategic infrastructure and contributing to the nation’s energy-secure future.
