L&T Ships Large Hydrotreating Reactor to Mexican Refinery

Larsen & Toubro’s heavy engineering division has completed the fabrication of a massive hydrotreating reactor for the Antonio Dovali Jaime refinery in Salina Cruz, Mexico. Weighing 1,751 metric tons, it ranks among the world’s heaviest reactors.

The enormous reactor was shipped to Mexico from L&T’s AM Naik Heavy Engineering complex in Hazira, Gujarat. The reactor is crafted using sophisticated Cr-Mo-V metallurgy and incorporates a technology devised by Axens, based in France.

The construction of the reactor at the Hazira facility was achieved in just fifteen months, utilizing advanced engineering techniques, Industry 4.0 manufacturing practices, and stringent quality control processes. As reported by Construction Week, hydrotreating is a catalytic process used in petroleum refining to eliminate impurities like nitrogen and sulfur compounds from hydrocarbon streams.
