MC²+, a brand of MC² Foundation, has launched MC²+ Ignite, a sector-specific accelerator programme aimed at supporting deep-tech startups developing innovative technologies for India’s rapidly evolving energy sector. Driven by the vision and strong support of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG), MC² Foundation has made significant progress within a short span of time. The launch of MC²+ Ignite marks an important step in creating a stronger innovation ecosystem that connects industry challenges with cutting-edge research, technology and entrepreneurship. Moreover, the participation of the CMDs of India’s leading oil and gas companies demonstrates the strong commitment of MoPNG and the energy industry towards this collaborative initiative.
MoPNG Secretary and Industry Leaders Launch MC²+ Ignite at IIT Madras
Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary, MoPNG, along with the CMDs of India’s oil and gas companies and the Chairman of bp India, officially launched MC²+ Ignite at IIT Madras. The initiative brings together some of India’s most important energy stakeholders to identify technology challenges and support startups capable of developing scalable solutions for the sector.
Creating a Common Platform for Industry Challenges and Innovation
Addressing the gathering during the launch समारोह at IIT Madras, Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary, MoPNG, and Chairman, MC² Foundation, explained the Foundation’s core objective. He said MC² Foundation was established to bring the technology problem statements of India’s major oil, gas and energy companies onto a single platform. The Foundation aims to connect these challenges directly with academic research institutions and startups while supporting promising ventures in their journey towards global scale. As a result, the initiative seeks to create stronger collaboration between industry, academia and startups, while reducing duplication of research and investment.
Addressing Duplication and Fragmentation in Energy Research
Explaining the need for such a collaborative platform, Dr. Mittal highlighted the fragmentation that MC² Foundation aims to address. “Several of our companies can be working on the very same catalyst at the same time. That is duplication of work, of investment and of bureaucracy — and it comes with no direct interface to the institutions where the research is actually happening.” By bringing technology challenges onto a common platform, MC² Foundation aims to improve coordination, optimise investments and establish a more direct connection between industry requirements and scientific research.
Energy Innovation Is Fundamental to India’s Future
Emphasising the critical importance of energy, Dr. Mittal underlined the fundamental role it plays in economic and social development. “If there is no energy, there is no life, no economy, no business, no food and no water.” He also stressed that India’s innovation ecosystem must look beyond the domestic market. According to him, achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat will require Indian companies and startups to develop technologies and products capable of competing at a global scale. “We cannot become a Viksit Bharat by focusing on the Indian market alone. We have to produce at a global scale — that is how costs come down,” Dr. Mittal Said.
Supporting Startups from Innovation to Market
Addressing the founders and innovators present at the launch, Dr. Mittal assured them that MC² Foundation intends to support startups throughout their growth journey. The support ecosystem will include technical and managerial mentorship, assistance in accessing funding and greater market visibility. Importantly, the initiative also seeks to provide startups with the confidence that successful technologies can find a pathway to adoption within India’s energy ecosystem. “We will be with you through the entire cycle — mentorship that is both technical and managerial, help with funds, and the visibility that a PSU will procure your product when it is ready. You should not have to worry about whether a market exists.”
Building India’s Next Generation of Energy Technologies
With the launch of MC²+ Ignite, MC² Foundation has taken a significant step towards building a structured innovation pipeline for India’s energy sector. By bringing together MoPNG, public sector energy companies, global industry participants, academic institutions and deep-tech startups, the initiative aims to transform industry challenges into commercially scalable technologies. As per the press release, MC²+ Ignite could help strengthen India’s energy innovation ecosystem, reduce duplication in research and development, accelerate technology commercialisation and support Indian startups in building solutions not only for the domestic market but also for the global energy transition.
