Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. and NS Solutions Corporation (NSSOL) have joined forces to transform supply chain operations through advanced decision-making and optimization.
Driving Smarter, Faster Supply Chain Decisions
This collaboration brings together NSSOL’s expertise in mathematical optimization and business design with Mitsui Chemicals’ deep understanding of frontline manufacturing and logistics. By integrating these strengths, the companies aim to develop actionable, cost-effective solutions that enhance productivity across operations.
According to Mitsui Chemicals, a proof of concept (PoC) conducted at several of its manufacturing sites already shows significant promise—demonstrating potential business improvements worth hundreds of millions of yen annually per site. As this initiative scales across more locations, the group expects to generate benefits totaling several billion yen.
Tackling Supply Chain Challenges with AI and Data
Historically, Mitsui Chemicals relied on individual experience and intuition to respond to demand fluctuations and production capacity issues, an approach that often-compromised speed and accuracy.
In response, the two companies are co-developing a data-driven decision support system. By leveraging NSSOL’s advanced optimization algorithms—including production scheduling, inventory allocation, and multi-product planning under raw material constraints—they aim to replace traditional planning methods with faster, more accurate, AI-powered solutions.
This initiative builds on Mitsui Chemicals’ in-house production planning optimization program and began formal study in fall 2024. The PoC is currently underway, focusing on production and inventory management for resin products at the company’s domestic manufacturing sites.
Real-World Application in Production Planning
One early focus area involves optimizing monthly production volumes based on supply-demand balance, helping to prevent overstocking or underproduction. Additionally, the team is working to streamline production sequences to minimize losses and reduce changeover workloads. With promising results from these pilot efforts, Mitsui Chemicals is preparing to move into actual operational deployment.
Looking Ahead: Expanding the Optimization Scope
Building on initial success, the companies plan to extend their collaboration beyond production and inventory. Future phases will target broader areas such as logistics network efficiency and sales plan optimization. This includes exploring new strategies for route planning and demand forecasting—helping Mitsui Chemicals make better decisions about what to produce, when, and where to deliver it.
