Peru could rise to become the world’s leading copper producer—provided it activates at least 70% of its mining project pipeline, valued at over USD 64 billion. As per press release, Gustavo De Vinatea, General Manager of the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers, highlighted this opportunity while speaking to RPP Noticias.
A Historic Opportunity for Growth
De Vinatea stated that Peru can move from third to first place globally if it brings most of its pipeline projects into operation. Notably, nearly 70% of these projects focus on copper, reinforcing the country’s strategic advantage.
However, despite holding the world’s second-largest copper reserves, Peru has not matched this potential with production growth. Since 2018, no major mines have begun operations. Instead, companies have relied on expanding and optimizing existing mines.
Copper Becomes the “New Oil”
Meanwhile, copper has taken center stage in the global economy. De Vinatea emphasized that the metal now plays a critical role in electrification, technological innovation, and the transition to clean energy.
Furthermore, rising demand continues to accelerate due to the global energy transition, rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, and increasing construction of data centers. As a result, supply constraints have become a pressing issue worldwide.
He pointed out that Peru is uniquely positioned to benefit from this surge in demand. Unlike previous resource booms, the country now has a rare chance to fully capitalize on its copper reserves.
Mining Drives Jobs and Economic Development
In addition to production potential, the mining sector significantly contributes to employment and economic growth. Currently, it generates around 270,000 direct jobs and more than 1.6 million total jobs, including indirect employment.
De Vinatea stressed that these positions are formal and high-quality, making mining one of the most opportunity-generating industries in Peru.
Focus Turns to proEXPLO 2026
Looking ahead, industry leaders will gather at proEXPLO 2026, scheduled from May 4 to 6. The event aims to shape the future of mining exploration while strengthening its global relevance.
In conclusion, De Vinatea expressed confidence that proEXPLO could become the leading mining exploration event in the Southern Hemisphere, further supporting Peru’s ambitions in the global copper market.
