Stanford University and Elsevier recognized over seventy scientists and faculty members from Pune among the world’s top two percent scientists, based on 2024 citations. The list highlights researchers whose work impacts the world significantly.
Leading Institutions Represented
The largest number of scientists are from Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), followed by Symbiosis International University, National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), and the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA). Other notable contributors include faculty from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Armed Forces Medical College, Dr DY Patil Dental College and Hospital, KEM Hospital, Pulmocare Research and Education Foundation, Dr DY Patil Medical College, Pune Institute of Business Management, Agharkar Research Institute, National Institute of Virology, and the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics.
University Leadership Applauds Faculty
Suresh Gosavi, Vice-Chancellor of SPPU, said, “We are proud that 20 of our members secured a place in the top 2% scientists’ list worldwide. This underscores the university’s commitment to both basic and applied research. Most of these faculty members dedicate themselves to teaching while conducting valuable research for societal benefit, which is truly commendable.”
Researchers Reflect on Recognition
Debarati Chatterjee, Professor at IUCAA, noted, “Fundamental research is more than that. You cannot put a measure on knowledge and discovery.” Similarly, Chandrashekhar Rode, Emeritus Scientist, NCL, added, “It feels good to be recognized. It also brings respect to the whole team because research is always a team effort.” Syed Dastager, Senior Principal Scientist at NCL, emphasized that citations are just numbers, “Science is not about making it to lists; what truly matters is when research brings real benefit to society,” Dastager mentioned.
Symbiosis International Celebrates Impactful Faculty
Vidya Yeravdekar, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Symbiosis International University, highlighted, “We are proud to share that 19 of our faculty members have been featured in the prestigious Stanford University Top 2% Scientists List 2025. This recognition places our researchers among the world’s most impactful contributors to science, technology, and innovation, underscoring Symbiosis’ growing academic footprint nationally and globally. Of the 19, two are from our Nagpur campus and one from our Noida campus.”
