Qatar has reaffirmed its commitment to remain a reliable energy partner for India, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions impacting global fuel markets. Qatar’s Energy Minister, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, conveyed this assurance during discussions with Hardeep Singh Puri in Doha.
Focus on Stability and Global Trade Flows
During the meeting, both sides welcomed the two-week ceasefire announced on April 8, viewing it as a positive step toward stabilizing the region. They also emphasized the need to ensure unimpeded freedom of navigation, smooth functioning of global trade routes and stability in energy supply chains. These measures, they noted, are essential to prevent further disruptions in global fuel markets.
India’s Dependence on LNG and LPG Imports
The discussions come at a crucial time, as India is actively working to secure its energy supplies amid global uncertainties. Currently, Qatar remains India’s largest supplier of LNG. It is also a key source of LPG imports. India relies on imports to meet nearly 50% of its natural gas demand and about two-thirds of its LPG consumption, with a significant portion sourced from West Asia.
Expanding Bilateral Energy Cooperation
In addition to supply assurances, both ministers reviewed the full spectrum of India–Qatar relations, including energy cooperation, trade and investments and people-to-people ties. They also discussed restoring shipment flows, reviewing existing agreements, and exploring opportunities to strengthen long-term energy collaboration.
Strengthening Strategic Partnership
Overall, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the India–Qatar partnership. As reported by knnindia.co.in, as global energy markets remain volatile, this collaboration will play a vital role in ensuring stable energy supplies, supporting economic growth, and enhancing long-term energy security for India.
