China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) commissioned a specialty polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) resin facility with an annual production capacity of 50,000 metric tonnes at its subsidiary, Chongqing SVW Chemical Co., Ltd. The facility has successfully completed its initial startup, achieved stable operations, and produced specialty PVA products that meet quality specifications. Significantly, the first commercial shipment has already been exported to Europe, marking the beginning of global supply from the new plant.
World’s Largest Single-Site High-End PVA Production Base
With the commissioning of the new facility, Chongqing SVW Chemical’s total PVA production capacity has increased to 210,000 metric tons per year, making it the world’s largest single-site production base for high-end polyvinyl alcohol. The additional capacity will help meet the growing global demand for specialty PVA materials used in high-value industries, including: Photovoltaics (solar energy), Electronics, Optical films, Pharmaceuticals and Advanced industrial applications.
Specialty PVA Supports High-Performance Applications
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a water-soluble, biodegradable polymer widely used across industrial and consumer markets. High-purity specialty grades offer excellent transparency and mechanical performance, making them suitable for applications such as Optical films and LCD polarizers, Pharmaceutical formulations. Laminated safety glass for automobiles and high-speed trains, textile processing, construction materials and water-soluble packaging. These versatile properties continue to drive demand for premium PVA products worldwide.
Advanced Technology Enhances Production Efficiency
The newly commissioned facility incorporates advanced alcoholysis and precision purification technologies, enabling the large-scale production of high-performance specialty PVA grades. SVW Chemical currently manufactures more than 100 PVA grades, each designed to meet specific industry requirements and performance standards. During project execution, the engineering team successfully addressed complex challenges related to temperature control and product consistency. Furthermore, the company introduced a new polymerisation process that increases production capacity by 40% compared with previous-generation equipment.
Sustainable and Smart Manufacturing
In addition to boosting production, the new facility integrates several sustainability and automation features to improve operational efficiency. These include four exhaust gas recovery systems, wastewater recovery units and fully automated packaging systems. Together, these technologies enhance resource utilisation, reduce environmental impact, and improve overall manufacturing efficiency.
Completed in Just 17 Months
Sinopec completed the project in 17 months, achieving 1.98 million safe working hours throughout construction. During commissioning, engineers optimised equipment performance and fine-tuned operating parameters to ensure stable production and consistent product quality from the outset.
Expanding Global Presence
SVW Chemical has over 40 years of experience in PVA research, development, and manufacturing. Since introducing its first PVA grade, the company has expanded its portfolio to more than 100 products, with over 70 grades exported to more than 40 countries, including key markets in Europe and the United States. As reported by prnewswire.com, the company plans to leverage its expanded manufacturing capacity and R&D capabilities to develop additional high-value specialty materials, broaden its PVA product portfolio, and provide customers worldwide with a more reliable and sustainable supply of advanced polymer materials.
