Somaiya Vidyavihar University inaugurated the Centre of Excellence in Polyurethane Technology (CoE-PUTech) in collaboration with the Indian Polyurethane Association (IPUA) at its Mumbai campus. This initiative follows the MoU signed between SVU and IPUA in April 2023, marking a major step toward strengthening education, research, and innovation in polyurethane science and technology. At the heart of the new centre is the Post-Graduate Diploma in Polyurethane Technology (PGD-PU Tech.), a work-integrated learning programme designed to equip students and professionals with practical, industry-relevant skills.

Industry Leaders and Academics Unite

The inauguration ceremony brought together academia and industry leaders, reflecting the centre’s collaborative spirit. Dignitaries present included Mr. Harneet Kochar, Chairman, IPUA; Prof. V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor, SVU; Prof. Ajay Kapoor, Vice-Chancellor Designate; Dr. Satish Modh, Pro Vice-Chancellor; and Prof. S. Sivaram, Professor of Eminence, SVU. The event also saw participation from faculty members, research scholars, postgraduate students, and industry representatives from Dow Chemicals and BASF India, underscoring strong industry engagement in SVU’s academic initiatives.

Blending Theory with Practice

The PGD-PU Tech. diploma is designed to combine classroom learning with practical laboratory training at the PU-PPAD Laboratory. Students will gain hands-on experience in polymer science, polyurethane formulation, material characterisation, product design, and sustainable manufacturing practices. To ensure flexibility, the programme combines online modules with in-person lab sessions. It is accessible to working professionals and diploma holders seeking upskilling in polymer and polyurethane technology.

State-of-the-Art Laboratory and Research Focus

The CoE-PUTech laboratory is equipped with advanced instruments such as hot air ovens, airflow testers, pycnometers, dumbbell presses, ball resilience and Bennewart flex testers, abrasion and compression set testers, and foam cutting machines. These facilities enable students to gain real-world technical experience in polyurethane processing and applications. Research at the centre focuses on product innovation, end-of-life management, recycling, and sustainability—addressing key challenges across the polyurethane value chain.

Voices from Academia and Industry

Prof. V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor of Somaiya Vidyavihar University, said, “Somaiya Vidyavihar University has always aimed to bridge academic learning with industry practice. The Department of Polymer Science continues to create opportunities that blend theory with hands-on experience. This diploma programme will empower students and professionals with skills directly relevant to the polyurethane sector.”

Shri Harneet Kochar, Chairman, Indian Polyurethane Association, added, “This collaboration represents a structured partnership between academia and industry. SVU provides the academic framework and infrastructure, while IPUA contributes industry expertise. Together, we are creating a platform for innovation, skill development, and collaboration in polyurethane technology.”

Empowering the Next Generation of Polyurethane Professionals

Through the Centre of Excellence in Polyurethane Technology, SVU is reaffirming its commitment to industry-aligned education and sustainable innovation. As per the press release, the university combines academic excellence with practical exposure. It aims to develop future-ready professionals who can drive advancements in polyurethane materials, applications, and sustainability practices.
