Government has taken a significant leap towards embracing renewable energy with the introduction of the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM). The initiative, led by the ministry of new and renewable energy and power, aims to position India as a global leader in green hydrogen production, utilization, and export. With a substantial investment of ₹19,744 crore, the mission sets ambitious goals for the country’s renewable energy sector.

As part of the NGHM, key tenders have been awarded to facilitate the establishment of green hydrogen production and electrolyzer manufacturing facilities. Ten deserving companies have been selected to develop production facilities capable of producing 4,12,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, while eight companies have secured tenders to build electrolyzer manufacturing capacities totaling 1,500 MW per year. Additionally, scheme guidelines for green ammonia and green hydrogen aggregation models have been issued, fostering further expansion of the initiative.

The NGHM also focuses on identifying and developing regions capable of supporting large-scale hydrogen production. Two green Hydrogen hubs are earmarked for establishment, with three major ports – Deendayal, Paradip, and V.O. Chidambaranar (Tuticorin), being identified for development as hydrogen hubs.

The petroleum and natural gas regulatory board (PNGRB) has facilitated the establishment of gas trading exchanges to promote a gas-based economy. The Indian Gas Exchange Limited (IGX), authorized as the first gas exchange, aims to enhance transparency and efficiency in gas trading, thereby improving the availability and distribution of natural gas across the country.

As reported by SOLARQUARTER, through these coordinated efforts, the NGHM targets a monumental Green Hydrogen production capacity of 5 million metric tons per annum by 2030, demonstrating India’s steadfast commitment to a cleaner, greener future.
