thyssenkrupp Uhde secured a contract to build a low-emission polyester (PET) production plant for KÖKSAN in Turkey. The facility will be located in Yumurtalık and is scheduled for completion and commissioning by 2028. The plant will produce 3,24,000 tons of PET resin annually, catering to a wide range of packaging applications as well as bulk continuous filament (BCF) production.

Advanced Technology for Sustainability

The company will deploy its patented Melt-to-Resin (MTR®) technology, which significantly improves process efficiency. This advanced method eliminates the need for traditional solid-state post-condensation steps, thereby simplifying production. As a result, the process reduces energy consumption, lowers operational costs, and increases raw material yield. Moreover, it enables a reduction in carbon emissions by up to 30% through lower fuel and electricity usage.

Scope of Work and Execution

thyssenkrupp Uhde will handle multiple aspects of the project. It will provide the technology license, carry out basic and detailed engineering, and supply all major plant equipment. In addition, the company will train KÖKSAN’s operating personnel to ensure efficient plant operation.

Strategic Importance for KÖKSAN

KÖKSAN aims to strengthen its position in the global PET market through this investment. The company plans to distribute the produced PET resin not only within local markets but also across regions such as the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. The project builds on the successful collaboration between both companies, as earlier production lines have already demonstrated strong performance and consistent product quality.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

The MTR® process delivers both economic and environmental advantages. It reduces capital and operating expenditures while improving efficiency. At the same time, it supports sustainability goals by lowering the plant’s carbon footprint. As per the press release, the combination of reduced energy consumption and higher yield highlights the dual benefit of cost efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Conclusion

The project reflects a growing shift toward sustainable chemical production. By integrating advanced technology with efficient design, thyssenkrupp Uhde and KÖKSAN are setting a benchmark for low-emission polyester manufacturing while strengthening their global market presence.
