Toray Industries, Inc. announced a major expansion of its global engineering plastics business through its subsidiary, Toray Industries (India). The company will establish a new production line for high-performance polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) resin composite materials at its facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. The facility will manufacture Toray’s flagship Torelina® PPS resin series and will have a designed annual production capacity of 3,000 tonnes. Significantly, this will be Toray’s first proprietary PPS composite production facility in India, marking an important milestone in the company’s regional growth strategy.

Capacity Expansion to Meet Rising Global Demand

The project is scheduled for completion in early 2027, with sample shipments expected to commence in April 2027, followed by a rapid transition to full-scale commercial production. Upon completion, Toray’s global PPS production capacity will increase from 33,600 tons per year to 36,600 tons per year, further strengthening its position as one of the world’s leading suppliers of PPS materials. The expansion comes amid growing demand for high-performance engineering plastics across automotive, electronics, electrical, and industrial applications, where PPS materials are valued for their exceptional heat resistance, dimensional stability, and chemical resistance.

Supporting Toray’s Long-Term Growth Vision

The investment forms a key part of Toray Group’s long-term management strategy, “TORAY Challenges 2035.” Through this initiative, the company aims to strengthen localized manufacturing capabilities, improve supply chain resilience, and expand its regional production footprint in high-growth markets. The facility will help Toray build a more comprehensive engineering plastics ecosystem in India while supporting customers with faster delivery, enhanced technical support, and localized supply.

Creating Synergies Across Engineering Plastics Operations

As part of the project, Toray will establish an integrated PPS composite production system that complements its existing nylon and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) resin businesses in India. This integrated approach is expected to create significant operational synergies while strengthening Toray’s engineering plastics portfolio. By expanding local production capabilities, Toray aims to meet the evolving requirements of customers seeking advanced, lightweight, and high-performance materials.

Expanding Customer Support and Market Presence

In addition to expanding manufacturing capacity, Toray plans to strengthen its commercial and technical support infrastructure in India. The company intends to establish a new office in Pune, Maharashtra, in July 2026. The facility will enhance Toray’s production, sales, and technical service capabilities, enabling closer engagement with customers and faster response to market requirements across the country.

India Emerges as a Strategic Growth Market

Toray’s increased investment reflects growing confidence in India’s expanding manufacturing sector, favourable industrial policies, and rapidly developing automotive and electronics industries. With rising demand for advanced engineering materials and continued industrial growth, India is becoming an increasingly important market within Toray’s global expansion strategy. Through this latest investment, the company aims to strengthen its regional presence while supporting the development of next-generation manufacturing and mobility solutions.

Reinforcing Global Leadership in PPS Materials

As reported by news.chemnet.com, the Andhra Pradesh facility underscores Toray’s commitment to innovation, localized production, and sustainable growth. By expanding PPS manufacturing capacity and strengthening its presence in India, the company is positioning itself to capitalize on future market opportunities while reinforcing its leadership in the global engineering plastics industry.
