Vedanta Limited has doubled the annual zinc production capacity of its South African operations to 500,000 tons following an investment of nearly US$600 million in the second phase of the Gamsberg zinc mine. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Vedanta Limited Director Priya Agarwal-Hebbar inaugurated the expanded capacity at the company’s flagship mining operation in the Northern Cape province. The expansion marks a significant milestone for Vedanta as it strengthens its global zinc production capabilities and supports South Africa’s industrial development.

Gamsberg Expansion Strengthens Vedanta’s Global Zinc Operations

The Gamsberg mine hosts one of the world’s significant zinc deposits. Its expansion represents one of South Africa’s major mining investments in recent years and forms part of Vedanta’s broader strategy to increase zinc production across India and South Africa. Through this expansion, Vedanta aims to strengthen its position in the global zinc market while meeting rising demand from industrial sectors.

Vedanta Targets Three Million Tons of Annual Zinc Production

Vedanta has set an ambitious target of achieving 3 million tonnes of annual zinc production across India and South Africa. Its subsidiary, Hindustan Zinc Limited, aims to contribute 2 million tons, while Vedanta Zinc International plans to increase its annual production to 1 million tonnes. This strategy will enable the company to expand its production capacity and strengthen its ability to serve customers across key industrial markets.

Zinc Demand Supports Industrial Growth

Zinc plays a vital role in galvanisation, which protects steel from corrosion and extends its service life. Consequently, the metal remains essential to the construction, automotive, infrastructure and manufacturing industries. By expanding its zinc production capacity, Vedanta aims to strengthen supply to these sectors and address growing global demand.

Investment Supports South Africa’s Industrial Development

The Gamsberg expansion forms part of Vedanta’s investment commitment of ZAR 21 billion, equivalent to nearly US$1.5 billion, announced at the 2018 South Africa Investment Conference. The project also follows President Ramaphosa’s call for greater Indian investment in key South African industries. During the inauguration, President Ramaphosa highlighted how the project had progressed from an investment commitment to construction and production. He also welcomed Vedanta’s plans to establish zinc smelting capacity in the Northern Cape and emphasised the importance of cooperation between the company and the government to address the project’s requirements.

Vedanta Plans a Zinc and Industrial Hub

Priya Agarwal-Hebbar said the expansion demonstrates Vedanta’s commitment to South Africa’s industrial development, employment generation and economic growth. She also highlighted the company’s long-term ambition to establish a zinc and industrial hub in the region. The proposed development could further strengthen the region’s industrial ecosystem and create opportunities for supporting industries.

Community Initiatives and Sustainability Commitments

Beyond its mining operations, Vedanta has invested nearly US$20 million in community initiatives in South Africa since acquiring Vedanta Zinc International in 2011. These programmes focus on healthcare, education, sports, livelihoods, infrastructure and social welfare, benefiting more than 32,000 people annually. Furthermore, the company opened an oncology centre in Namakwa earlier in 2026, reinforcing its focus on community healthcare. Vedanta operates across India, Africa, the Middle East and East Asia, with businesses spanning metals, critical minerals and related industries. As part of its sustainability strategy, the company has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.

Expansion Positions Vedanta for Future Zinc Demand

With the Gamsberg expansion doubling its South African zinc production capacity, Vedanta is advancing its long-term growth strategy. As reported by themachinemaker.com, the company’s planned production increase across India and South Africa, combined with potential downstream investments, is expected to strengthen its presence in the global zinc industry while supporting industrial development and employment in South Africa.
