Cooling tower is one of the important constituents in a mix of utility equipment. Cooling towers are needed in virtually all process industries from power plants to hydrocarbon and downstream chemical plants.

They are used to remove heat generated in the processes in many process equipment and bring down the temperatures, as otherwise they can disrupt the operations.

Basically, a cooling tower is a heat exchanger, expelling heat into the atmosphere and returning the cold water to chiller. Air and water are brought in direct contact with each other to reduce the gathered heat in water through evaporation and the cooled water is then reused.

This book on Cooling Towers by PN Narayana Pillai, brings into it his over 36 years of experience with FACT Engineering and Design Organization (FEDO), a premier EPC company in India, where he was the General Manager. Pillai has covered the CoolinTowers, comprehensively from preliminary aspects to its operations and maintenance.

In about eleven chapters the book covers the basic operating principles and types of cooling towers in the introduction; cooling tower standards and codes, selection, design, tower fill design, performance evaluation and field testing, improving energy efficiency, etc. The book has included all latest state of the art developments till date.

There are about five appendices, which provide the list of cooling towers designed and built by the author in India, Report on Experimental Cooling Tower, Manual on Design, A thesis on axial flow fans and enthalpy of air-water vapour mixture.

Every chapter is well illustrated with pictures as well as figures and diagrams explaining theory, principle design etc and mathematical calculations right through.

Pillai’s several decades of hands on experience in the design, operations and maintenance of many process equipment and in particular cooling towers has really helped in providing the reader with an in-depth understanding on all aspects of cooling towers. This would help not only the working engineers in process industries as a refresher, but even students who can get a very good grasp of the subject.
