The Karnataka government signed a landmark agreement with Gas Authority of India (GAIL) to establish a wet waste-to-biogas facility in Bengaluru. The initiative marks the first project of its kind in the city, aiming to transform municipal waste into clean energy and organic manure.

Project Investment and Capacity

Under the agreement, GAIL will invest ₹123 crore, while the state government has allocated land for the plant. The facility will initially process 300 tonnes of wet waste per day, converting it into approximately 12 tons of compressed biogas and 21 tons of fermented organic manure (FOM) daily. This dual output addresses both energy needs and sustainable waste management, offering a practical solution to Bengaluru’s growing urban waste challenges.

Promoting Renewable Energy and Sustainability

The biogas produced by the facility will supply industries, hotels, and other commercial users, promoting the adoption of renewable energy while reducing reliance on conventional fossil fuels. At the same time, the production of fermented organic manure provides a valuable resource for agriculture and landscaping, closing the loop on waste-to-resource conversion.

Future Expansion and Replication

The Karnataka government has expressed interest in replicating similar projects across the state through future partnerships, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable urban development, renewable energy, and improved sanitation. The initiative demonstrates how public-private collaboration can effectively tackle environmental challenges while fostering green energy solutions for cities.
