The government is preparing to introduce a national carbon capture initiative that seeks to balance the country’s growing energy demand with its climate commitments, while continuing to rely on coal as a key energy source.
Incentives for Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage
The program will promote carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) technologies, offering significant funding support. According to Rajnath Ram, Energy Advisor at NITI Aayog, select projects will receive 50% to 100% financial assistance. He further mentioned that CCUS technology captures carbon dioxide either directly from industrial emissions or from the atmosphere before storing it underground.
Driving Industry Adoption
Ram underlined that these incentives are designed to accelerate the adoption of carbon capture solutions across industries. By integrating CCUS with coal-based energy systems, India aims to create a bridge between economic growth and sustainability.
Balancing Energy Needs and Climate Goals
India’s electricity consumption is climbing rapidly, and coal will remain a crucial part of the energy mix for at least the next two decades. As reported by projectoday.com, the initiative reflects a pragmatic approach – leveraging coal resources while simultaneously advancing low-carbon technologies to meet long-term climate targets.
