India and Denmark discussed expanding bilateral cooperation in offshore wind energy, green hydrogen and renewable energy integration into electricity systems. The discussions took place on November 3, 2026, as both countries seek to strengthen their three-decade-long energy partnership. The meeting comes as India accelerates its renewable energy expansion and seeks to attract investments, advanced technologies and international partnerships to support its clean energy transition.
India and Denmark Explore New Renewable Energy Opportunities
Denmark’s Business and Competitiveness Minister Martin Lidegaard met India’s Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, in New Delhi on the sidelines of the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026. The discussions focused on identifying opportunities for greater collaboration in offshore wind energy, green hydrogen and the integration of renewable power into electricity systems.
Highlighting Denmark’s experience in clean energy development, Martin Lidegaard said, “Denmark’s experience is clear: the green transition does not mean sacrificing economic growth. We have developed renewable energy and improved energy efficiency in a way that is internationally competitive. India brings scale, ambition, and a rapidly expanding market. Denmark brings experience, technology, and a strong tradition of cooperation between government, business and research. Together, we can help build an energy future that is cleaner, more competitive and more secure.”
India Targets 100 GW of Wind Energy Capacity by 2030
According to a statement issued by the Danish government, India has an installed wind energy capacity of nearly 60 GW, approximately eight times Denmark’s capacity. India aims to increase its installed wind energy capacity to 100 GW by 2030. The country recorded annual wind capacity additions of 6.05 GW in FY2026, marking a record for the sector. Consequently, cooperation with Denmark could help India leverage international expertise, technology and investment to accelerate offshore wind development and strengthen its broader renewable energy infrastructure.
Three Decades of India-Denmark Energy Cooperation
Energy cooperation between India and Denmark spans nearly 30 years. One of the early milestones was Denmark’s support in establishing the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) in Chennai. Building on this longstanding relationship, both countries are now exploring opportunities across emerging renewable energy technologies, particularly offshore wind and green hydrogen.
IEA Report Highlights India’s Renewable Energy Opportunities
An International Energy Agency (IEA) report examining India’s renewable energy market was also launched during the summit. Denmark co-funded the report, which analyses the policy and market developments driving India’s renewable energy expansion. Furthermore, the report identifies key challenges and opportunities that could influence the sector’s future growth. As reported by moneycontrol.com, the discussions and report launch highlight the potential for stronger India-Denmark cooperation in advancing renewable energy technologies, attracting investments and supporting India’s long-term clean energy ambitions.
