India is set to embark on the development of the world’s largest renewable energy initiative. Named the Khavda Renewable Energy Park, after the nearby village, the extensive project will cover an area equivalent to Singapore, spanning 726 square kilometers. The estimated cost of the project is around $2.26 billion.

Located in the Rann of Kutch in the western Gujarat state, the Khavda project aims to generate 30 gigawatts of renewable energy annually, sufficient to power approximately 18 million homes. Currently heavily reliant on carbon fuels, particularly coal, which accounts for 70 percent of the nation’s electricity, India is looking to significantly increase its renewable energy share, which currently stands at just 10 percent of its total electricity consumption.

As reported by VOA, as the third-largest emitter of planet-warming gases globally, following China and the United States, the ambitious renewable energy project reflects India’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
