Kochi Corporation is advancing its waste management strategy with a ₹90-crore compressed biogas (CBG) facility at Brahmapuram, which is now ready for commissioning. Trial runs for food-waste processing have already begun, marking the first step toward full-scale operations.
Daily Capacity of 150 Tonne Waste
Implemented by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), the facility will process 150 tons of biodegradable waste daily, generating about 15 tons of biogas. Operations will start with 75 tonne per day and gradually scale up to full capacity.

Multiple Technologies for Reliable Operations
Alongside the new projects, the black soldier fly (BSF) plant at Brahmapuram will remain operational. Plans are also in place for a waste-to-energy facility, which will add to the city’s capacity. Collectively, these facilities will be able to process more than 250 tons of waste daily, ensuring uninterrupted operations even if one technology experiences downtime.
Strengthening Through Decentralised Solutions
As reported by projectstoday.com, the decentralised treatment plants at Ponnurunni, Ravipuram, and other sites will complement Brahmapuram’s facilities. This multi-pronged approach is designed to build a resilient, sustainable waste management system for Kochi.
