The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is bringing in international well-control experts to help contain an uncontrolled natural gas leak at Well No. RDS-147A in Assam. The leak started during routine servicing operations, when technicians observed sudden gas surges. Although no one has reported injuries, the gas has continued leaking unabated for over a week.
Round-the-Clock Operations and Global Support
ONGC said it continues focused efforts to control the gas flow. The company’s in-house experts are working round the clock and consulting a global well-control agency, though the agency has not disclosed its identity or arrival timeline. ONGC confirmed that mobilization is already underway.
Partial Diversion of Gas Achieved
To mitigate the risk, ONGC has successfully connected the leaking well to a nearby production facility, enabling partial diversion of the escaping gas in a controlled and safer manner. Additionally, ONGC has deployed a continuous water blanketing system as a precautionary measure to suppress any potential ignition sources.
Environmental and Air Quality Monitoring in Place
Environmental safeguards have also been strengthened. The pollution control board of assam is conducting continuous air quality monitoring, and reports indicate that air quality around the site remains within permissible limits as per the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). ONGC further confirmed that the gas is non-toxic and lighter than air, allowing it to disperse upwards, reducing risks to nearby communities.
Noise Levels Within Safe Range
Noise monitoring has also been initiated. Reports show that noise levels beyond a 500-meter radius of the site remain within acceptable standards, further affirming that the situation is under observation and control.
Community Safety Remains Top Priority
